I am deciding whether to get a wow.allakhazam.com/db/item.html?witem=31858 or a http://wow.allakhazam.com/db/item.html?witem=31856.

My situation is this. I am lvl 70 and prot spec, def 507, 11,490HP, 5433 Mana, 204 spell dam and 83% avoidance all unbuffed (no libram yet). I have been doing non-heroic instances and just finished my Kara key. I have been noticing that in all encounters other than the tougher bosses I am not taking enough damage. Now while this may sound funny this is causing me to run low on mana and have to drink between pulls and fights (which can be a hassle in zones like Black Morass). Do many of you swap out def gear for mp5/int gear while doing trash and easier bosses, or am I missing something? Running BoW on myself doesn't seem to help a whole lot and also becomes an issue with my second problem.

I just started playing again after a 6 mth hiatus and most of the other people in my guild have been running Kara for a number of months, Kara is not on farm status so I will not catch up gear wise for a while and I am finding it hard to keep threat on single mobs when I grp with the better geared guild members. Doing a reg BM the other night the two druids just used auto attack and no talents to make sure I kept threat. I want to get into one of the guild groups that regualarly runs Kara but if the DPSers have to tone it down when I tank that will be hard. Also due to the mana issue I am not judging SoR continuously which may be a slight problem. Is this threat issue always going to be an issue until I get better gear or do I just have to work on my technique as threat is fairly much maxed?

Now back to the trickets. One gives the 51sta and a ~100 dam proc when I am hit 10% of the time. This would be good for AE tanking but other than the stam seems weak in other situations as one proc every 10 hits against a boss means very little. The other gives a +8 spell dam buff that stacks 10 times eveytime I damage the mob, now if the holy shield, ret aura, BoSalv and other passive damage sources cause it to proc I can get +80 spell dam fairly quickly and am thinking this would increase my threat when I tank single mobs. Any advice would be appreciated, I am in the armory(the only Kanguran) if you want to look at my current gear.

Thanks

Kanguran

There's a couple of points I want to make in favor of the Darkmoon Vengeance card.

First off, it's a 10% chance when hit by a melee or spell to inflict 95 to 115 holy damage to your attacker. That's the only piece of reflective holy damage we can do to casters. So that helps a lot.

Secondly, 51 sta on a trinket is godly. It's actually closer to 60 STA when you factor in talents. That alone would put you over 12k hp which is nice to have.

In regards to the Crusade card, I'm not sure that landing HS or Ret Aura or any of those count as landing a spell against the target. Avenger's Shield sure... but I don't think reflective damage counts towards that.

As for your mana starvation in normal instances, downgrading your gear will solve that problem. Swap out your awesome tanking gear for other gear and you should be fine. 83% avoidance is still a bit low, so you might want to concentrate on that before you decide to start running Kara.

Simply put, there isn't a trinket in the game that is better for a protection paladin than the vengeance card.

I have epic Kara gear, but when I tank non-Heroics and the like I put back on my Righteous set for the same reason you mentioned. Downgrading your gear for certain fights/instances is a great idea.

I think you're right around the same stats I had when starting Kara (before this last patch and the 10% stamina boost) so I think it's a little bit of technique and gear. There's definently room for gear improvements outside of Kara still, and that may or may not solve your threat issue. Generally speaking about 200 spell damage is sufficient for 5mans/Heroics/Kara, where that number will go up as you progress further, and you stated you have 204 leading me to think you may want to work on technique a bit.

Jack and Dil hit the nail on the head: DMC: Vengeance is godly for a Paladin tank, and that would surely help you with your threat, and though it's better than it was pre-patch, our health is still a bit lower than a Warrior's. I've actually thrown around the idea of getting Madness to go with my Vengeance since it also gives 51 Stamina, but my current 2nd trinket I still use quite often for its use function.

I'm also in agreement with Jack, I believe the other trinket would not proc on reflective damage, but only things like Avenger's Shield and our Judgements making it's effectiveness pretty limited, especially when weighed next to 51 Stamina and a Holy damage proc.

I really tried to forget that one when it popped into my head upon reading that. But I couldn't. So now you must all suffer with me.

So most say the wow.allakhazam.com/db/item.html?witem=31858 is the best trinket in the game for a prot pally? I looked at this item many times. I even found it on my server for 1500g, the complete deck. I haven't seen many with it.

Honestly I haven't seen many tanks period that don't have the Vengeance Card, particularly Paladins, at least not at the Heroics/raiding stage. Maybe on your server the Cards are hard to come by, or they are always so expensive that no one wants to buy them? I don't know, but the fact remains, Darkmoon card: Vengeance = godly for a Prot Paladin.

I have 4 of the cards... the other 4 are always like 300-400g but I check every so often to see if someone accidentally forgot a 0 when putting in their price.

Well next time i see it i will pick it up and wait for the Fair to come to town. I probably won't use it yet, http://www.wowarmory.com/character-sheet.xml?r=Norgannon&n=Mikeman

My defense is only 501 and avoidance is 89.4 with Holy Shield up.

But im getting closer.
