Mind flay... Is it worth it?Follow

I hit 20 last night and threw a point in mindflay. I was thinking it was going to be better than it seems to be.

I think the only thing it could be useful for is to slow running mobs...

Is this the truth or am I just missing somewhere.

BTW I did look at the SP guide. I am just trying to find out if at level 20 if it was really worth the point or is it normally a slightly later spell people pick for the point?

I don't know much about priests, but especially when you hit 30 and get VT, and then at 40 with shadow form it's how you DPS with shadow damage between mind blast and SW:P. AFAIK anyway.

At level 22 (next rank of smite) here's the following DPS/DPM for smite, holy fire, and mind flay:

Smite: 39.2 DPS, 1.03 DPM
Holy Fire: 25.1 DPS if spammed, 1.04 DPM if spammed, 33.7 DPS if DoT is used (based on cast time, not duration, since it would add that much to your DPS), 1.39 DPM if DoT is used
Mind Flay: 25 DPS, 1.67 DPM

It's an incredible increase in DPM, allowing you to go longer on boss fights as well. Granted it does less DPS at level 20, so it appears to be more situational than staple here. Once you get VT, shadowform, etc mind flay will probably overtake the holy spells.

Yes mindflay is worth it. As you get more spell dmg it will get better.

Mind Flay really starts getting good once you get Shadow Weaving, Darkness, Shadowform, and Misery. Spriests rely on those heavy multipliers (~46% of base damage with full weaving) in order to keep up, but once you have them they're awesome.

Thanks. I just wanted to make sure that was the best choice for that point as learning the roll of a Spriest is a little rough considering I came from a physical dps standpoint. =S.

I have 5 points in Spirit Tap and 3 in black out for the stun it seems to proc often enough to keep it. also have 2 points (I think) in SW:P Reading a little bit alot of people don't like blackout. I know it's not the "best" but it helps at times.

Saved my life enough to make it worth keeping in my books. =D

I never used blackout while I was leveling. Once you hit 70 though you may want to switch your points from Spirit Tap to Blackout. If you're just raiding and doing dailies Spirit Tap is pretty much useless. Blackout can also be huge when it procs in arena too!

Mindflay is your bread and butter also! It will be great later on as the other posters stated.

i came to hate blackout (while leveling) because mobs would too often blackout on my opening spell (when they're out of range for a mind flay). it interrupted my normal smooth spell sequence.

kudos to you for taking 5/5 spi tap & 2/2 imp sw:pain

If you are a shadow priest, you are limited to few spells if you are going to use Shadowform effectively. Otherwise, I still think a channeled spell is better than casting a spell because you are doing damage for the entire duration.

That makes sense. I'll have to look over the Shadow tree again and see where another good place to put those 3 points would be. Doesn't seem like very many options.

I am pretty sure once I get to around 60 and start getting MP5 and stuff like that Spirit tap will be less effective because I'll still be getting my mana back quickly still nice but less effective.

Hell when Im healing I throw a SW:P on the main target in hopes of a proc from Spirit Tap to help with mana in sticky situations. It's nice when it does.

Mind Flay is very worth it, the DPS is great. And if you use your spells correctly, you have no down time with spirit tap.

PW:S > Mind Blast > SW:P > Back Up > Mind Flay > Mind Flay > Wand: Full mana, XP, and loot :).

Shadow focus is not a bad spot for those three points. And if you group a lot, shadow affinity would be great.

I may not know priests very well, so if I'm wrong I'm sorry, but this is what I would go with to get to 30: http://www.wowhead.com/?talent=bZZxMhp0xo (1/5 or 4/5 mind blast keeps it to a 1.5X second cooldown, making it fit rotations better, and 4/5 puts it on a 3X second cooldown, making it fit in well with interweaving mind flays)
