hello all.
As an introduction I re-rolled a Pally (My 1st pally) the week before Xmas on a PVP server. I have a 70 warrior Tank on a PVE server that I've been playing for just over 2 years.
This is my first re-roll.

Now, I have read all the guides and stickies here and know what my roll is going to be, i feel i know what i need to know about the pally to get me going when I reach end game (Holy Pally FTW!!)

My current goal is just to level efficiently.
At the moment I have a cookie cutter Ret leveling build and AH gear that complements that build. I'm doing just fine.
My new pally is quickly approaching level 35 and from what I am reading from the posts here is that Prot leveling is just as good as Ret leveling; so i'm intrigued and want to give it a go.

I know what spec I want, thats not really my question.
What I really want to know is what gear should I concentrate on leveling as a prot pally?
Should I go for Ret gear so I hit (melee) harder?
or stack defense / stam (like a good tank should) and just take a beating?
(Does my weapon DPS even come into play grinding / leveling this way?)

Honestly, I don't care to go to any instances below Ramparts, and even then i don't want to tank as a pally (only if i really have to) my goal for this character is a healer so when I decide to instance post 60 I plan on a respec and swapping to a heal set to ...well... heal... (but I dont want to level as holy):P

So thats it, my first pally post.
I hope it dont hurt to bad.

While it's doable at 35, I would recommend holding off until 40 before you respec into prot. At 40 you can get Holy Shield, Plate Armor, and a mount which really makes things easier, but here's the general breakdown of how you grind as a prot:

Preparation
- Have a spike on your shield, try to get the best one up.
- Have Blessing of Sanctuary up
- Have Retribution Aura up

What you do

1. At 40 you can get a mount, find a group of MELEE mobs and ride through a few of them.

2. Immediately dismount, pull up Holy Shield

3. Pull up Seal of Wisdom and judge it on the first mob you start attacking.

4. Pull up Seal of Light and attack the mob with that if you feel you need the health.

5. Consecrate and keep pulling up Holy Shield and Seal of Light or Wisdom depending on if you need the mana or the health. If you find yourself needing both, pull fewer mobs next time.

6. Rinse and repeat until they are all dead and move on to the next bunch.

Tips and Tricks:

*As you know, you need the mobs to be in front of you in order to block, so some clever backing up will ensure that they are always in front of you.

*Don't panic and try to heal yourself. Seal of Light should be enough to keep you alive. If you find yourself staring to die, just bubble and then heal yourself up. Remember, since you are fighting Melee mobs Blessing of Protection will be just as useful as Divine Shield.

*Don't give up! Your first few pulls may be a bit tedious or hard as you are learning how many mobs you can take at once. It might take a couple minutes to burn them all down, but just divide the time it took by the number of mobs and you can see how effecient AOE grinding is.

*As for gear, STA is going to be your biggest help here. Defense rating if you can find it, block rating if you can find it. I wouldn't worry too much about dodge. INT will help you a lot too, since the more mana you have the longer you can fight without going OOM.
-Keynote on INT, while it is helpful in AOE grinding, if you do end up tanking an instance, INT is not as useful. So don't get trapped into this thinking when you want to pick up actual tanking gear for instances. You might want to have a few gear pieces that you swap out depending on if you are grinding or tanking.

*Avoid caster mobs, they will destroy you.

*For even faster grinding, pair up with a mage or another AoE class and tank the mobs while they AoE them down. Just make sure you get a consecrate in before they start going crazy.

Thats absolutely perfect. Thank you.

since I will be mostly using AH bought gear, do you think getting ...of the eagle plate would be a good starting point?

I honestly dont intend to tank in an instance.
I really dont plan on going to an instance till ramparts. (old world instances = been there done that 100X over.)

I have a 70 warrior and 2 other toons in the 60's, I was a 60 tank for a long, long, long time... ZG, MC, AQ20 and 40.

honestly, I just want to level fast and efficient and as a warrior (i leveled to 70 as prot), the words AOE, Grind and Protection are never put in the same sentence so this really intrigues me.

i really have my mind set on being a healer in late levels so i really want to put my energy into obtaining the gear for the job.

Yeah, of the eagle plate would be good. You don't need to be on a 1STA:1INT ratio in terms of gear. Maybe more of a 2STA:1INT ratio should be good enough.

Protection Paladins can AoE grind by porcupining their enemies to death. Learn to love and accept it. Or if you find it's too boring, then go back to single-target questing as ret.

So i'm guessing DPS Melee damage isnt really calculated at all then?

so crappy AH green weapons should be sufficient then?

i'm still not 100% up to speed on all the talents in the prot tree but I have a few levels to 40 to go, maybe another week possibly less since this weekend i have nothing planned :)

One thing here - while it's great to be able to use your spells to heal yourself, it's also perfectly OK to use bandaids too. Often when I was grinding for stuff like insignias I'd save my mana for fighting and bubble and bandage if I needed to heal. It's up to whatever you prefer.

Melee dps isn't really factored much, if you can, try to get a spelldamage weapon, or if you have enough money put a +40 spell damage enchant on a really good (somewhat fast) weapon. Try to aim for a 1.6-2.0 speed weapon. This will maximize your reckoning usage and your judgement procs.

AH greens should be enough, but there are a few good plate blues that you can grab as soon as you hit 40. Check out the Item advanced search here on alla and check them out.

And look around the prot tree, make a couple sample builds. Link it here and I'll have a look-see and check out if you've made a beginner's mistake or two. It happens.
