When using misdirection, is it better to use distracting shot or arcane?

From what I've been reading, Multi-shot is the best starter, followed by whatever blows your skirt. Distracting is not the best aggro generator. A good crit will net you more hate, at least it always does for me!

Once you have something resembling decent gear, Distracting Shot fails to scale. The best opener is of course Aimed Shot. Follow that with Multi and Arcane (if you can beat the Autoshot). Those should do more threat than throwing Distracting Shot into the mix.

I've found the best rotation to use is Aimed Shot, followed up by an Arcane or Multi-Shot, then stop Auto-Attack, and wait for Aimed Shot to come back up, and use it for the third charge.

Of course if it's AE, Volley still works with the Misdirection Bug. You can cast Misdirection, then Volley and it will revert all of the damage you cause with Volley to your tank. It uses no charges while you're casting Volley. After your volley is done, run in with an Explosive Trap. The explosive trap will take all of the 3 charges from your Misdirection, but you've just given the tank your full Volley + Explosive Trap aggro. Works nicely for the beginning of AE pulls.

Distracting Shot is almost utterly useless unless you're trying to grab aggro away from another player, or you're trying to keep aggro on a trapped mob, since it cuases no damage, it just gives you more and more threat.

if im not misstaken distracting shot is about the same threat as a shot doing around 800damage.
so yea at 70 its basicly any shot>distracting shot , a shame really still waiting for a new rank of distract.

Does an explosive trap has any use on this?

For example if you pull a group of 5 mobs with multi and they run into an explosive trap and the tank keeps em there

Would the trap keep generating agro?

while volley is nice to give a whole bunch of mobs token aggro, it's simply not enough damage to compare with aimed shot as an opener given the channeling time. ie: Don't bother using volley on a boss.

That depends on what you are doing. If you need to pull multiple targets (more than 3) and get the hate on the tank long enough for the tank to develop more AOE hate on themselves, then volley could easily be one of the openers. If you analyze which target MUST stay on the tank, then you could do something like:

Aimed => Primary Target (must stay on tank)
<Group pulls>
Multi-shot => Pulled Group (generates more hate on tank)
<Need more targets on tank>
Volleyshot => Second group

This could get 6-10 targets on the tank. If you can handle that and the tank is stompin, sweeping and bashing more targets to keep the hate, the mages and AoE'ers can dive in and start unloading with full fury sooner. If you didn't use Volley or Multi, you risk some targets pulling off the tank immediately.

I can definitely see situations where Volley might be useful in a misdirect. You also might get more than the tank can handle so I'd probably guess you'd do this if your tank was of a higher level than the mobs.

yes explosive trap works. It uses 1 of the charges on your misdirect but is well worth it if your just gonna AoE a bunch of non elite trash or maybe 2 or 3 mobs.

I use my first charge while in SL around the skeletons all the time with Explosive trap. Then multi and volley it is a nice damage pump and the skeletons die before the volley ends that way.

Here's a scene from Rocky II:

Gazo: How's about investing in condominiums? It's safe.
Rocky Balboa: Condominiums?
Gazo: Yeah, condominiums.
Rocky Balboa: I never use 'em.

Distracting Shot. It's only purpose is to generate threat, typically for a Misdirect.
I never use it. It's not even on my hotbars, and hasn't been there for a long time.

Distracting Shot rank 7 costs 140 mana and generates 700 Threat.

Arcane Shot rank 9 costs 230 mana and generates [$RAP*0.15+273] Threat. For me this is an average of 761 Threat. AND damage.
Auto Shot costs zero mana and does (for me) and average of 615 Threat. AND damage.

For a Hunter in a mana constrained situation, a MD Auto Shot will work as well as a Distracting Shot. For a Hunter not in a mana constrained situation a MD Arcane Shot will work better than a Distracting Shot.

So who needs Distracting Shot?
