Prot healingFollow

I know that for the most part we need to be pretty highly specialized in order to function effectively but...

I'm currently holy spec'd with ok pre-kara/pre-heroic gear (+1300 heal, 17.5% holy crit, 70mp5, 9.5k mana). I've been holy since level 35 or so (ret before that) and I sort of want to try out prot. While doing quests/dungeons I've collected a decent set of tanking gear so that I can get my Def close to 490 and enough stamina to have 9-10k HP (if you count prot talents). So, I'm planning to re-spec soon and try it out. But, the problem is, I get asked to heal 70 dungeons a lot by friends and guild mates. So, my question, have any of you tried healing while prot spec'd (just swapping gear)? How difficult is it, is it doable? Or, will I need to do full re-specs each time I want to switch roles (can get kind of pricey)?

I unfortunently have been reduced to healing when we do 25 man raids, and I don't respec for it, I just throw on my healing set which right now is about half Kara epics. I do decently as an off healer, but truth be told, it's "fluff" healing and they do just fine when I decide to run up and smack things keeping a Judgement up throwing no/little heals. I'm about 1100-1200 +heal with just gear (not Holy spec).

In 5 mans, normal mode, I can heal sufficiently on trash, and sometimes well enough for boss fights, but not always. This is assuming the tank I have is decently geared. If the tank is too far undergeared, no way I can heal level 70 normals as a Prot spec.

It's not like pre-BC dungeons where an off spec can throw on some healing gear and do just fine healing a run, you really should be specced accordingly.

Most prot pallies have a healing set, they can bust out. Off healing or even 5 man non heroic healing is viable.

Further you get though the less effective it becomes. Especially as you lose your bonus to +healing from int, holy crit bonus etc as well as illumination which means all that heal efficiency is gone. Heroics and beyond you will need to respec which at 100-110g turn around becomes unsupportable. Not to mention trying to build a tanking/healing set, enchant and gem both.

I've seen people try it before and it always boils down to the same simple idea "jack of all trades, a master of none". Split your efforts in terms of gear and progression and you will always be half assed at both and behind the curve.

As a tank I get sucked into off healing fights in kara, and have had to be the healer for non heroic runs a few times. I hate it, but I can manage it.
Unbuffed my heal gear gives me +995healing, 8028mana, 8.75% spell crit, 175mp/5 noncasting, 94mp/5 casting.

Try out tanking for a while. Then try out healing as a tank for your friends. See if you can live with the difference or if one of your friends wants to be a healer for you for a change.

In the end you need to do what gives you the most enjoyment from the game.
