for you priests who are tailorsFollow

#1 Jan 01 2008 at 3:41 PM Rating: Decent
When is a good point to switch over to tailoring? I've been holding off, sticking to herbs and skinning for the cash until now, saving for the flying mount, i guess. When does tailoring start to payoff in terms of accessibility/price of materials vs. selling cost/kickass-ness of products?

Thanks.

Doesn't really pay off till 360 when you can make your first primal mooncloth/frozen peice.

Well, turning that useless extra linen-cloth-silk-runecloth and whatnot into bags or simple armor can be profiting, because everybody needs bags and they usually sell pretty fast and with reasonable profit. Even low level armor that's easy to make can be sold for some nice 30-40 silver profit and the sums grow as you grow levels and skill. If ye put yer heart into it, it's quite easy to be a lvl 40 priest and make 50-60 gold in just couple of hours.

My tailoring was at 1 till 70, spent a day grinding it to 350+ and then a day or so for last few points.

I had a alt mining for cash though.

I don't, or at least i don't myself, see much of a money maker in tailoring (until you don't need special cool down cloth) as i use all mats for my own wardrobe.

tailored epics (primal mooncloth or shadowweave) are better than kara gear. it's all bind on pickup, too...

but get your epic mount first.

You can switch whenever. Honestly I'd drop skinning, IMO once you stop questing skinning stops becoming profitable. Herbalism tends to make more money anyway.

But do note that if you intend to go holy at 70, make sure you grind out your cloth reserves before you make the switch. Otherwise you'll find yourself trying to grind netherweave with a healing build and you'll either take forever or blow cash on two more respecs.

I took up tailoring at 70 when I decided to start gearing up. It only took a couple days to get to 350.

I'd recommend taking up tailoring and powerlevelling to 350 before lvl70, only because its useful to start making primal mooncloth or spellcloth (depending on which set you want) as early as possible with that 4 day cooldown. Of course save up for your lvl60 mount first, get a little more gold together, gather mats by farming or take a little time to get the best prices possible at the AH and then make the switch. For me, this was at lvl65 I think, but do it just as soon as you can once in Outland. If you're going holy definately keep the herbalism as you'll need alot of primal life for the primal mooncloth and +healing enchants, and the herbs are useful to get potions and elixirs made anyway. Some leather is needed to powerlevel tailoring, so check out what you need before you drop skinning. Certainly get your higher level tailored items disenchanted, you'll need those shards.

I took up tailoring at 60 with my priest, basically for the reasons Helluna stated.

The PMC robe alone (which you can't even make until 375) takes 14 primal mooncloth. You can make 2 pieces a pop, so that's 7 4-day cooldowns, and you'll have to wait 28 days to get your robe. The belt and shoulders take less of the primal mooncloth, but it still takes a while with that blasted 4 day cooldown.

The alternative, of course, is buying the primal mooncloth at the AH, but on my server, prices are ridiculous. By starting to powerlevel tailoring at 60, I had all my primal mooncloth made and waiting for me when I hit 375 in tailoring.

You could also look for a PMC tailor who is willing to sell their cooldown. It can be alot cheaper to do that than to buy the cloth itself at the AH. Just make sure you supply the mats. On my server, I can get about 20-25g for the cooldown as opposed to 50g or so for 2 pieces of cloth.

Good luck with it!

Not true at all.

By the time he hits 70 he will have gained plenty of spell damage gear from regular questing. Outland is swimming in spell damage cloth, the old days of holy priests being unable to solo effectively are long gone.

I farmed the powder for tokens to get a black Halaa talbuk with a pure healing build, it wasn't any less tedious than doing it shadow.

That's because you were farming guys that were 5 level below you. Best netherweave spot is level 70 guys (the blood elves in Netherstorm or SMV). Grinding as holy is still a pain unless you're picking up some really good instance/raid drops.
I'd suggest having the cloth and the primals farmed up if you still need to make the switch to holy from shadow. Then find some high-level PMC tailors that you know and buy their cooldowns (in my experience, guildies will often give them to you for free once they have what they need). I'd suggest having 350 tailoring - if possible - by about level 62/63, when you're in Zangarmarsh and can easily get to the crafting spot.

Farmed exalted with Scryers too, but okay.

Thanks a ton, guys--lots more information than I'd hoped for, but all of it good. (Had completely overlooked the cooldown on making some mats.)

Just hit 64 tonight, so will probably go see a tailor. It will be fun to level up and actually craft something (instead of merely gathering), and the 4 characters who have been serving as my priest's cloth bankers are running out of room, anyway.

Any particularly good guides on powerleveling? I had planned on using the one in WoWwiki, but if anyone has a better source, please share...

Normally I avoid the Oboards like the black plague but this happens to be a great guide for all professions.

I didn't get tailoring till 70, and looking at it now, I wish tailoring epics weren't so damn op'd. FSW/PMC will last you untill tier 5. Get the SS/WM sets and you're sitting pretty for a long time. If i were you I'd get your epic mount while you're making money and then get tailoring since it's a huge money sink.
