Me and my gf decided to roll some new characters the other day and for a chance, she's going to be a warrior, and I'm going to be a priest. We figure this way we don't have any problems later finding groups (in theory) but I'm stumped with talents.

I'm wanting to be able to heal well, but want to lean towards the shadow/damage dealing side of things. It's worked well for me in the mpst (my Horde Main is a (heavily)Balance Druid that collected a pile of +heal gear along the way and can main heal just as well as deal damage, partly because a good number of Balance talents increase mana regen, so they sort of help healing, but there doesn't seem to be as many (if any) shadow spells that help healing, or any holy/disc that really help shadow.

Would it be better if I went with more Disc spells for the Holy Damaging spells? IF I get a pile of +heal gear but spec shadow, will I still (in theory) be able to be a competent main healer? And if anyone's really bored (or if someone has one/one in the FAQ's I missed) have any ideas for a talent buildup?

End game you will have to choose a spec but not really until 60+.
Shadow Priests can -easily- main heal any Pre-BC instance as well as the starting TBC instances. Heck, maybe even further than that. I know in a raid situation you must be specced for your job but a shadow priest with a healing gear set will still be a great healer.

lots of raiding guilds like to have shadow priests because their AOE mana batteries, AOE healers which makes the main healers life so much easier and do great dps.

I've healed everything up to the high-level 5-mans as shadow with a decent set of healing gear (SethHalls, ShattHalls, Steamvaults, Mech, Slabs). That was all with about +950healing at the time. The biggest problem a shadow priest will have healing is the first boss of Auch Crypts with his 4x cast time that hurts gheals a lot. You can potentially heal the harder 5-mans and probably even heroics and Kara if you've got the gear to support it.
