That's what happens when you hang out with sailors.

What smells like fish oil and old whiskey in here?

Strange...

Anyways, for Thedeletedone even though I'm Prot as we speak and I have major respect for the Talentset I'm going to say Ret until Outlands is the fastest way to level via single targeting quest monsters. Either take Ret to SoC or even go further, really there is no spot until later where you're "wasting points" in Ret, but as Jack will attest to Holy makes a nice compliment to Ret.

For you Dilberrt, the 100% best leveling technique here will be AE grinding by leaps and bounds. Go full Prot and use the same tactics you would use as if you were tanking for an Instance. Pull 4-10 depending on what it is. Base Mage AE's become more DPM efficient when hitting 3 or more mobs so keep that in mind. All three trees have efficient and powerful AE options, but you're real best bet is to have the wife spec Frost and do an uncommon Shatter/IceShards/ImpBlizzard spec that allows a constant rain of Blizzards to crit often and for massive damage and will help somewhat with runners (generally the paladin will not break the 'Frozen.' Lay down a Flamestrike first and when the ground effect wears off. I recommend staying away from Arcane Explosion as it is quite a threat producer. BoWisdom is definatly your best Blessing in a perfect world, but it may be smarter to use Salvation to keep the baddies off your Mage.

Actually, this isn't entirely accurate. Complex, but not accurate. You see, with 2 points in Arcane, AE becomes the lowest threat AoE in the mage's ************ behind Holy Nova in being the best damage for threat AoE in the game). What makes it perilous to use is the fact that you do all the damage quickly and at close range.

At close range, it only takes 10% more threat than the tank to pull aggro from him, instead of the 30% extra you need at ranged. Couple that with the fact that so much damage is done immediately instead of over a period of time, and you have a problem. Especially when you consider that the paladin tanking does his threat in many small increments(Ret Aura reflects, holy shields, consecration ticks, etc).

It also has the drawback of being very mana inefficient.

I'd recommend rotating Flame Strikes with Blizzards, myself, with a spec like you suggested, but mostly because the damage is done just like a paladin's threat, in multiple smaller increments such that over time it adds up to a lot.

Oh I know alllllll about Subtlety, don't worry about that. Fact is though that it is very possible for a mage to eat up all their mana doing AEs (when I tank Instances Mages and Locks that never usually go OoM do so frenquently with me.) AE's are TONS of damage, just at a high mana cost. Arcane explosion coupled IS superb damage but that in and of itself is part of the drawback.

Flamestrike is nice especially with the ground aftereffects, and a Shard-Blizzard spec makes for a RIDICULOUS time (I made an Ice mage respec to that just to do runs with me.) The benefits are litterally overwhelming.

Just from the game, he's impossible to shut up on the boards Smiley: grin

I'm considering the unfortunate foray into Holy as his vacation.

Sorry for leaving in mid-convo. I had to go do something... piratey. Yeah, let's go with that.

Anyhoo, I just started up again during the Christmas break, I might stop again when school starts, but I'm not feeling the same huge urge to play as I did pre-crisis (that's what I'll be calling my quitting the game). I still want to play, but only a few BGs here and there. I have no interest in running instances as I've gotten kind of bored with them.
