What should i spec for leveling as a pally? Is ret better than prot?

Ret is more efficient for leveling.

lvl 35+ Prot becomes just as efficient.

As ret, you go out and kill one or two at a time.

As prot, you pull a ton of mobs, back into a corner, and let them kill themselves.

My most recent pally did well up to about 24 or so as retribution. At that point, it started feeling like I was falling behind the curve against other classes of the same level with comparable gear. After what seemed like a little struggle, I re-specced protection at 25, ran a few instances to get appropriate gear and a little jump in exp, and was cruising from there straight through to 40.

Now I'm starting to adopt many of the AoE tanking techniques that I've used on my older pallies and things speed up every couple of levels when new abilities show up.

Ret has been acknowledged even by Blizz as the "leveling build" for paladins, which caused end game ret to get angry. You can kill stuff faster, which makes for more xp, which means you get kill/collect quests done faster which means more xp . What does faster xp mean? You guessed it! Faster leveling /gasp!!!!

The Prot tree offers nothing that helps kill faster until you get towards Reckoning and Holy Shield. Survivability is great but in no way reflects towards faster leveling. However 35+ after reckoning it does pick up and levels quite effectively and is competitive with Ret, though ret will still have a slight edge. It also allows you to tank, so since it is in a virtual dead heat with ret 35+ lots of pallies go this way so they can tank dungeons. DPS is entirely dependant on how many mobs are hitting you, so there are situations where you will level slower, some where you will go faster depending on zone/mobs/quests but it evens out.

Holy has absolutely no gear that compliments it until lvl 58+ which sets it at a SEVERE disadvantage for 48+ levels. It also has very little in the way of upping damage done, so you kill slower and earn xp at a fraction of the pace. So while doable it is not the most desirable build for leveling.

As for Divine Str in the Holy tree it will and always has been a very poor choice compared to the alternative of Divine Intellect. Since the majority of your damage either as Ret or Prot will be Yellow damage coming from your mana pool the increase to Int will always outweigh minor gains to AP. Also boosts survivability and ability to grind for longer durations with less downtime thanks to an increased mana pool.

Dilberrt, I think you are right about not needing to do DPS, but if you wish to to fight often with your wife as a team, i think the best combo u can make is by you being fully prot and she does AOE. Basically u fight multiple mobs at once and after a couple of rounds she can start the AOE she is good at: Blizzard, Arcane explosion or that fire AOE. Make sure you use ret aura, BOSanc, holyshield, and put spikes on your shield too, and start the fight with concent and use seal of wisedom and judgement of wisedom to keep up with mana

With a duo, especially a mage / pally duo you would probably best to go Prot/Holy. You could grab a bunch of mobs and hold aggro, she could run in and AOE, or just focus fire without fear of pulling off you. Couple points in the Holy tree would allow you to be able to heal and reduce down time, though with a constant source of food/water it shouldnt be too bad.

Would be pretty decent for PvE grinding. Few solo horde are going to jump 2 alliance of similar level, and if you have a 70 on you then there is not much you can do.

BoK or BoW up on the mage, you run in and drop a consecration with RF and Ret aura up and she gives it a second then bamo. Drink/Eat rinse and repeat. Imp Devo aura is a waste, Redoubt will help you soak damage better.

Be nice to know your level so I could give you an idea where to go.

A little truth in advertising to start.

If I were Dil it'd be a demand to start playing again... as holy.

Be glad I'm not Dil.

I'll wear the big boy pants when I start PvEing again. Just wanted to do some PvP while I could and maybe get the arena mace.
