Am I a good mage for my level?Follow

#1 Dec 29 2007 at 5:38 PM Rating: Default
I just started playing WoW about a month ago, prior to this I was on FFXI, and I do like WoW a bit better. The main switch was because I got an iMac...but that's beside the point, I don't really know how to gauge how "well" I'm doing, here is a pic of my talents/stats/backpack etc. so you can see what I basically have...

http://i18.tinypic.com/6l17tid.png

I just realized you can't really see all my equipment stats =/ so I'll write it out for ya.

-Shoulders: Ghostly Mantle 31 Armor +5 Spirit, +5 Intellect
-Back: Acidproof Cloak: 16 armor +3 Stamina
-Chest: Thick Cloth Vest: 34 armor +16 Reinforced armor
-Wrist: Greenweave Bracers of the whale: 15 armor +2 Spirit +2 Stamina
-Hands: Thick Cloth gloves: 21 armor
-Buccaneers Cord of Fiery Wrath: 19 armor +6 Fire spell damage (yeah, I know I'm an ice mage. It's for fire blast)
-Thick Cloth pants: 30 armor
-Thick Cloth shoes 24 armor
-Ring of Scorn: +4 Stamina -3 Spirit
-Seal of Sylvanas: +3 Strength +8 Stamina
-Weapon: Ceranium Rod: 31-47 damage @14.4 DMG/sec. +7 Stamina
-Wand: Gloom Wand: 18-34 damage @14.4 DMG/sec

I'm thinking about going all the way in Ice talents, I like the stuff I can do with it. Arcane would be my second choice...but meh I've already started on Ice. Anyway, I don't really group up with many people and I've been planning solo pretty much my whole time as a mage thus far. (largely because I would have no clue what to do in a group >_> I consider myself good when I'm by myself). I can take down lvl 22-23 easily, etc. Am I on a good path? =O I just don't want to ***** up and have to fix a bunch of things later on, I rather ask the experts opinions while I'm still early on (>'.')/ thanks ^_^

The armor doesn't really matter much on the stats. You will mostly be looking for stam/int AND spelldamage. I wouldn't drop a larger amount of stam/int for 7 spelldmg or anything like that if you have the choice.

I hope that helps.

Also, frost is a great tree to level, have fun with it.

Awesome thanks =D I actually ended up in a group of 4 people who weren't in my guild last night and it went relatively well. For professions I'm thinking about taking up tailoring, and I have first aid as a secondary (60/150 right now). Oddly enough I never bothered leveling up my first profession (enchanting.)

My leveling checklist for gear:

1)Is all of your gear no more than about 15 levels lower than you(special exceptions if it has a high level armor kit or spellthread)?

2)Is all of your gear good for your class(in a mage's case, like Anobix said, Stam/Int/Damage)?

3)Do you look good in your gear(what? I know I'm vain.)?

If you answered yes to all three, then your gear is fine.

I've never played FFXI but in WoW, especially for casters, armor really isn't a big deal. Your gear should focus on stamina and intellect when you get a bit higher more gear also starts having +spell damage on it. Drop the "thick cloth" pieces and pick up some greens with stats on them. (Judging by your seemingly newness to the game, and again based on not knowing how FFXI works) armor is classified by it's color. Armor with their name in grey are worthless, White can be useful but not as armor, greens are "common" are decent and have stats on them. Then as some of the stuff you have, theres blues and finally epics (purple). At 20 %100 of your gear should be greens and blues.

Also to further help the people on the boards out there's a website called www.wowarmory.com you can go there and search for your character and link the page on your post, this will show everyone all of your gear, your stats, pretty much every single little detail about your character that way it's easier for us to help you, and you don't need to type everything out :)

So far while lvling my mage alt Ive been just looking at int more than anything to reduce the ammount of drinking time. I havent been worried about stam because even if a mob hits me, im gonna be drinking soon anyways and havent had to worry about it yet.

I would say for your talents get 2 gathering skills (skinning and herb or mine because you can only track one at a time). Find a guide to level tailoring and get a list of the mats needed to get it to ~350. Keep what youll need, then save the rest till you hit 70. At 70 ditch one of your gathering skills (id suggest dropping skinning) then get tailoring and power lvl it for free.

The items you can make in tailoring can be made by any high level tailor, just get them the stuff and bam, there you go.

Enchanting is another decent skill to get for selling mats. You can post them high with no worries cause if it doesnt sell, you dont pay any AH fee (no vendor value).

So it's OK that my 69 mage is still wearing the [wowitem=28052]Goldweave Tunic[/wowitem]?

Well at least now you also know you look good if you're out of your gear.

The day I turned 70, I equipped a robe because I just couldn't stand the horrific look of that vest and the hideous green pants anymore. But yeah, that vest is fine all the way to 70.

HAHA I agree. I look pretty fruitastical with my purple Shadowcast Tunic and the green leggings. Meh...it distracts people in the BGs. While they are mystified by my psychedelic clothing, I'm winding up some spells for some P W N A G E.

Thanks =P. Here's the full thing:

Enjoy.

Anyway, I fairly like how I'm going right now. I level'd up to 23 and I'm trying to do quests to get gear that concentrates on +stats. I don't have enough money to buy awesome stuff from the AH yet, but I got first aid up to 63 and tailoring to 23, so hopefully when I get some higher tailoring I can begin to sell stuff =)

Just as a quick heads up, you can use the Armory to link your character's profile: http://armory.worldofwarcraft.com/character-sheet.xml?r=Baelgun&n=Shinjito

Also, you may want to start running instances. Go to http://www.wowwiki.com/Instance and search for the appropriate instances. Find a group, and run them for better armor and more money.

And try to find a guild. Most of the time, there will be small guilds that are willing to accept players and help them out. That is, if the new guild member doesn't act rudely.

***Edit: While you're still at a low level, check out the different professions and take up two of them. I noticed you already have Enchanting, but try to level them up quickly as you go. It will really help in the future because professions are a great money maker.

I already have a fairly active guild and I've ran two instances =P thank you for the replying though.

PS: I took up tailoring instead of enchanting.
