Shadow Priest...Follow

#1 Dec 26 2007 at 12:08 AM Rating: Decent
I've recently become a new member of the family of people who want to make a Shadow Priest, however I'm trying to look for a class that's the BEST for raiding? What class are raids going to want over other classes?

There's no one class that people want for raiding. All classes have something to contribute to the guild. Try asking some raid guilds in your server which class is the rarest on your server, then you can create that class and become slightly more wanted than other classes.

Shadow priests are very viable for raiding if played correctly.

Mana batteries are always welcomed.

Well, if you're looking for a seldom played class which is desirable in raids you could go for one of the following

Shadow priest (becoming more popular these days, still a lack of quality ones on my server)
Elemental Shaman (good dps, nice group buffs, offheal capability)
Moonkin druid (Don't care what you say, spec and gear them right and they are quite viable)
Fury Warrior (Outstanding dps provided you have the gear for it)
Retribution Paladin (Clearly some nice buffs in the last patch have seen videos of paladins doing some reall good raid damage recently)

Now, here's an important thing to note. If you decide to play one of these classes you have to be good at it VERY good at it. You see, by playing a class in a non standard raid spec you have to have something really worthwhile to offer a raid. I would take an average mage over an average elemental shaman or boomkin for example as the added sheep is something you can always use. Shadow priests are in some ways an exception to this as the buff to your group members is so high.

Still, don't take rarity as an indication that you'll be indispensible. Another thing to note is that the above builds tend to be more gear dependant than others and require specific build types to be truly desirable for raiding. Read up on them and start farming the gear like mad.

As mothra said, if you play an offspec, the only way people will take you seriously is if you're VERY good at it. Shadow Priests are becoming more common so some of the old stigmas aren't quite as enforced as before but for those other classes it's just as tough as ever.

I have seen so many raid groups for gruuls and kara looking for a shadow priest its not even funny.

Who in there right mind would take a hunter to kara over a shadow priest. Shackles and mana returns? Not to mention if they team with a lock they become like 40 percent more powerful(not actual fact).

Also there are a few kara fights where a shadow priest can make the fight a cake walk. take curator and netherspite for instance. also shade of aran.

Pretty much any fight that does not have aggro set on threat will let the shadow priest shine.

Simple truth is a ton of "good" guild groups that are down one person but want to continue on with the raid will usually ask for a shadow priest, Many sh*tty pugs probably wont but hell... they are pugs who cares.

so if its filling a dps spot. then yes the shadow priest is gonna take priority over some other classes.

I mean.. who does not want another shackle on moros, or more mana, or awsome life gains in some situations, what caster does not want the target to take 5% more damage from all spells, what warlock does not want to deal 15% more damage just for having a shadow priest in the group.

Every raid wants a Shadow Priest. First choice for a DPS slot in Kara and above goes to a Shadow Priest, which means second usually goes to a Warlock due to the synergy there. Then you start looking for CC + DPS, Mages and Rogues and Hunters. 25-man raids are often willing to take two or three Shadowpriests to keep the mana flowing.

By comparison, a raid will only need three, maybe four tanks, and those will be contested between Protection Warriors, Protection Pallies and Feral Druids. The raid will need more healers than tanks, but the competition between healing Priests, Shamans, Druids and Pallies can be fierce too.

Gearing up to be an effective PVE Shadow Priest is no more difficult than gearing up to be an effective PVE healing Priest...just get your +hit up to a certain point, then stack +shadow damage like crazy.

No class is "best" for raiding, but Shadow Priest is a solid choice.

We've brought 3 and try to bring two to every raid. One with the elem shammy/doomkin/mages, one with a healer group or a mixed caster/healer group.

"Best for raiding" is an inane statement. There is no answer. All classes are useful (though some specs are more marginal). Prot warriors, prot pallies, and feral druids for tanks. Holy priests, holy pallies, resto druids, and resto shammies for healing. Combat rogues, fury or 34/17 MS warriors, and hunters for pure physical damage, and mages and warlocks for pure caster damage. Then the off-specs - spriests, elemental shammies, enhancement shammies, doomkin, ret pallies. These offspecs offer something above and beyond just their damage (usually boosting other people's damage), but you've got to be very good at playing them in order to get into raids (though the same high standard applies to dps warriors as well, above what most other classes require).

The easiest to get into a raid will be a holy pally or resto druid. Maybe it's just my server, but good raiding tanks aren't too hard to find, but healers are more rare.

Spriests do plenty of dps and have an AOE heal/mana regenerator

Ive never heard Oom in a raid with them.

Arcane mages do fantastic dps but run out of mana quick. Shadow priests solve this trouble.

Off spec my ***. You spec to meet a role. Your class doesnt have a fixed role. This isnt goddamn FF whatever nurmeral.
