1st Time RogueFollow

I've been playing WoW for 3 years and have focused my time on a varity of classes, all being mana users. My career started with a Hunter then I switched over to a Priest. While I have loved support/healing enough to level a Resto Shaman I want to try my hands at a non-mana user.

Right now I have leveled a Warrior and Rogue both to level 30, which I feel is a comfortable level to make a call on which one to take to 70. So far I have found both classes increasingly difficult since neither is able to kite or heal themselves in a pinch. So before I decide on my next class I wanted to get some insight from the pros.

So here are my biggest questions on playing a Rogue.

1> What spec is best for leveling?

2> In general, what ability do you use first in attacking? (stun, back-stab, etc?)

3> What is your standard attack rotation? (All my other toons seem to have one)

4> When dealing with a group of 3 or more, what is the best tactic?

5> Any advice for a healer trying a non-healing class for the first time?

Thanks!

combat swords. Take imp SS, dodge, precision, DW spec, then blade flurry at 30. AR is required at 40.

when you get them, cheap shot or garrote.

I guess ill continue with what he didnt finish...

3. cheap shot (when you get it), SS until you have 5 combo pts, evis, repeat SS if nessesary.

4. when you get blade flurry/ad rush use them every time they are up on 2 or 3 mobs, evasion works well with it too. If they are humanoid, try using sap. blind and vanish work wonders too.

5. Be sure to get first aid up!

This is a definite yes... I've finally gotten mine maxed and it's helped out a lot, especially when I solo or when our healer is low on mana.

I don't do PvP, so I don't see the value in using cheap shot (with a sword spec) over garrote. A 4 second stun vs the garrote's DoT makes the garrote much more valuable to me. After I open with garrote, I then follow up with slice and dice and then sinister strike once or twice before eviscerate.

I know cheap shot awards two combo points, but the one point I get from garrote is enough to give me slice and dice for the duration of the fight (I do have talent points in imp. s&d). Even without the imp. s&d, 1 point should give you enough time to finish the mob with the haste still in effect.

Garrote is fairly minimal damage. From an efficiency standpoint, you're probably better off just using Sinister Strike (and I frequently do in most raids as it gets me on the target faster to boot). The Damage:Energy ratio isn't much higher, and any wasted ticks by killing the mob early is lost damage.

Cheap Shot will mean you take less damage and have less downtime. If your fights last an average of 8 seconds (which they will start to in the upper 50s), you are cutting down the damage you take by half. This directly increases your exp/hour rate as you spend more time fighting and less time healing.

A one point SnD can be good depending on what your white DPS is like and how long it takes to kill the mob. However, a 2 point Eviscerate is just bad. It will do less damage than Sinister Strike at that point.

Typically, when grinding, you want to CS -> SS -> SS -> SS -> Eviscerate. If you're grinding on the proper level mobs with proper level gear, that should easily kill your target. Many times you'll have to cut this sequence short and use a 4 point Eviscerate instead. The full 5 point Eviscerate cycle will take you about 8-9 seconds. Early on, this doesn't work so well as mobs are much stronger compared to you than if you were in your 50s grinding on mobs 2-3 levels below you (which you should always do anyway).
