Which tree?Follow

#1 Dec 24 2007 at 1:29 AM Rating: Decent
Just starting my first serious rogue and was wondering where I should start as far as getting the the most DPS as possible as I will be solo most way through leveling. I have looked at a couple of trees already but that really doesn't tell you where you start at, just the end result. So if anyone can help out a newb to rogues, it would be appreciated.

Also, I read most dps rogues use maces (dual wield?) and not daggers. Is this true?

Begining levels dont really matter. I pretty much leveled my Rogue all the way to its current level (62) as combat. Now and again switching to Sub/Assas for a level or 2, but combat spec is easily the best PvE tree.

You'll be best of leveling as Combat. Get Imp Sinister strike right off the bat and work your way up the tree, Get sword specialization as soon as you can as it will really help you along. By then you'll have a much better idea as to what helps you and can then start playing with your own little builds using what you think works, be sure to steal ideas from others (especially people on these forums) for spec ideas.

Daggers, Maces, Swords, and whatnot each have their place within a rogue's ******** Swords will dish out the most damage with a combat build in most PvE situations. Daggers can be incredibly painful in the hands of a mutilate or combat dagger rogue against bosses and other players. And Maces do a wonderful job of punting around your enemies in PvP Combat if you're specced for it.

I don't think that Sword Specialisation would be best to be honest. With my Rogue, around levels 30-50 I would use pretty much any weopan I had. If I picked up a Mace that had better DPS or Stats I would use it.

This is how I would spend the talent points:

Combat:

Improved Sinister Strike (2/2)
Lightning Reflexes (5/5)
Improved Slice & Dice (3/3)
Deflection (5/5) OR Precision (5/5) ---> Get both but choose either first.
Riposte (1/1)
Dual Wield Specialisation (5/5)
Endurance (2/2)
Blade Fury (1/1)
Weopan Expertise (2/2)
Aggression (3/3)
Adrenaline Rush (1/1)
Combat Potency (5/5)
Surprise Attack (1/1)

These are all the talent points that are cuurently being used in my Combat Tree. A few things:

Its not important to have 3/3 in Improved Slice & Dice. Most put 1 point in there. I personally do a lot of PUG's and it helps to keep me at the top of the damage meter.

Also note that you dont have to put it in the above order. This is just an idea of what to do from personal experiance. It is ONLY a game, and if you want to start in the Sub tree, feel free. As long as your having fun.

Hope the above post helped, and Merry Christmas and Happy New Year!

It depends if you want to level fast and efficiently: my guess is you do given that you have two characters in their sixties and levels 1-60 are going to be pretty old news to you.

If so then the Combat tree is -probably- the way to go. And swords are
-probably- the weapons to weild. Assuming WoW doesn't completely toy around with the trees anytime soon.

If not, then it doesn't really matter: take whatever tree you think looks most like the way you want to play and experiment. And enjoy the view as you go along.

Bland advice, but probably about the sum of it.

For the fastest levelling I would do this in this order:

2/2 Imp Sinister Strike
3/3 Imp Gouge (just to get to the next tier without wasting points in LR)
5/5 Precision (at this points it's a flat 5% increase to your DPS)
5/5 Malice
3/3 Imp Slice and Dice
3/3 Imp Evis
2/2 Murder
5/5 Lethality
2/2 Endurance

This will get you to level 39. As soon as you ding 40 you go respec and do this:

2/2 Imp SS
3/3 Imp Gouge
5/5 Precision
3/3 Imp Slice and Dice
2/2 Endurance (or Imp Sprint, it's really your choice, but I like the lower CDs)
5/5 Dual Wield Specialization
1/1 Blade Flurry
5/5 Sword Specialization
2/2 Weapon Expertise
2/3 Aggression
1/1 Adrenaline Rush

This will get you Blade Flurry and Adrenaline rush at level 40 and will allow you to take on 2 or 3 mobs at once whenever the CDs for both are up.

From there:

5/5 Malice
3/3 Aggression
2/2 Vitality
1/2 Imp Sprint (just to get 35 points in Combat for Combat Potency)
5/5 Combat Potency
1/1 Surprise Attacks
3/3 Ruthlessness
2/3 Imp Evis
5/5 Lethality
3/3 Imp Evis
1/1 Relentless Strikes
2/2 Imp Sprint

This takes you to level 68 and you will have 2 points left.

If you want a build that will give you a little more flexibility in PVP you can take 2/2 Imp Kick. If you want a pure DPS build you can take 2/2 Murder. With the exception of a couple demons and elementals in Outland instances, all of the bosses will be affected by Murder's damage bonus. However you will also want to PVP for some weapons for when you ding 70, so that choice is entirely up to you.

Try reading the stickies, nooble has a very nice talent progression in his rogue guide listed here.
Just scroll down to where it says 'Talents', his guide is better than anything posted thus far in this thread imo.
