Defense ratingFollow

Why is it when i put these on http://wow.allakhazam.com/db/item.html?source=live;witem=27739 I only get an extra 9 defense rating. When i look at my defense rating with no shoulders on it is at 448 and i add these i get 457. I am level 70 human. Any idea? I even have the correct color gems socketed so i get the extra 3.

Defense rating != Defense

I'm willing to bet money that you're looking at defense and thinking its defense rating. This is the same thing as there being a difference from crit and crit rating.

Well i don't think so, I am looking at my section that shows, ARMOR, defense, dodge, parry, block and resiliance. http://www.wowarmory.com/character-sheet.xml?r=Norgannon&n=Mikeman

That is a link to armory, defense is 457, when i take the shoulders off, it shows 448.

Well i tried it with other items and noticed the same thing, i have a ring that gives 10 defense, and it actually adds 4 to my defense rating.
#5 Dec 23 2007 at 2:02 PM Rating: Decent

It takes about 2.2 defense rating to get one point of Defense.

You have it backwards. Items and equipment add to Defense Rating, which goes through a formula for your level to add to your Defense stat.

Dilbrt is correct: Defense rating != Defense.

If you mouse over your "Defense: 457", you'll see it says "Defense Rating 208 (+87 Defense)".

So one point of defense rating won't give you one point of Defense.

According to http://www.wowwiki.com/Formulas:Defense
2.36 Defense rating = 1 Defense.

Well i guess i am slowly learning this game, Tried my first Heroic last night, ramparts. Things didn't go so well. We made it to the first boss but couldn't beat him. These guys hit very hard, trash mobs. I was taking about 1k damage each hit, even when i partially block. And a 2k or more sometimes. I wasn't impressed with the healer in the run from the beginning but of course i was the one taking damage. Anyways, i guess its back to regulars to get some more gear. I was kinda discuraged at first, thinking man im gonna have to respec to holy just to get badges to buy the really good tanking gear. Hopefully not. I have few spots in my gear that i can improve on. And i should be really close to the 495 rating. Hopefully i see a difference then.

Please don't fall into this trap. Some days it may very well be the healer, but I can tell you right now you're not geared for heroic tanking**. You're making things needlessly hard on the healer and there's only so fast they can get heals off.

Yes, mobs hit HARD in heroics. Hard, and often fast. You can still be critted, your mitigation is pretty bad too (why did you go holy and not go into the ret tree for your remaining points?). Add all of that together and even with the best healer you're going to be tough to keep up.

The best mentality you can have as a tank (and I would pretty much say as a player) is to not blame other people for shortcomings and failures. Particularly when you don't have room to talk. Sure there are going to be obvious idiots, but until you're squared away for something, it's just as much your fault as anyone else's. And the longer you blame other people the less you'll fix what needs fixing with your toon and the more miserable you'll make everyone in the meantime.

The good thing is that you're probably geared well enough for the regulars that you shouldn't need to swap back to holy to gear up. Just run the stuff that drops the gear on the gear sticky. When you get yourself squared away then try heroics again.

**actually I'm sort of confused by your gear - I wondered when I saw the healing libram if it was your PVP set but then I saw all the defense gear. Icy weapon enchant? Str/Stam gems? AP/Stam gems? SPIRIT ench on the chestplate??
#10 Dec 24 2007 at 5:45 PM Rating: Decent
Well i spent about 200g today and changed some stuff around, got my defense rating up some, cost me some health and mana. I'm still not sure what enchant to put on my weapon and chest piece. Can u link me a build that would be better for prot spec? u mentioned why i went into holy?

And i wasn't blaming the healer for us not making it, i was just not getting any heals. And i could tell the amount of damage i was taking that i was under geared.

I can't Poldy, I'm sorry. Smiley: glare

hamletarcher - you gear is slightly better but not a whole lot. You don't need to spend money to upgrade your gear. What you need to do is run instances. Normal level instances. Right now, and I don't mean to be cruel (well not entirely), you look like the poster child for why lowering the heroic key requirement was a horrible idea.

I think before you worry about enchanting your chestpiece you need to run regular Mech to get the Jadeskull breastplate or similar. Then put something useful like health on it.

I think you really need to ditch any enchant or gem that has +str or +AP. That's not where your damage comes from.

I think you need to get revered with the KoT to get a proper paladin tanking weapon and better pants. Then you need to put clefthoof or nethercleft on the pants and a +40 spell dmg enchant on the weapon.

I think that you can surely find something better than a +Arcane resistence belt.

I think you need to read the stickies. There's build info as well as gear info in there.
#13 Dec 24 2007 at 7:01 PM Rating: Decent
Well first off i do agree with the Jadeskull breastplate that seems to be a much better chest piece. But you said Keepers of time? Im guessing the Continuum Blade? How is that better then the one i have? I have looked for diffent pants to wear and can't find anything with a higher defense rating on them. Unless you were talking about the Timewarden's leggings?

As far as enchant on weapon, i have the enchant for the spell damage just haven't put it on my weapon. Chest piece I didn't think the extra 150 health would make any difference.

And i am almost exalted with Sha'tar so i will have the Crest of the Sha'tar shield soon, which should help some.

Mike

p.s. Well i honostly didn't know they had lowered the Heroic Key requirements. I am just trying to get better in the game, and obviously that would mean better gear. I don't mind being cruel as long as it helps me in the end, im not a little kid who gets mad about everything. If it helps me in the game (which in turn helps me in my guild) then i welcome it.

Mike

You're right for some reason I was confusing your sword with a different one. Crystalforged is a great weapon, icy's still a crappy enchant Smiley: grin

Yeah I meant the Timewarden's leggings. Sure you lose some defense but you pick up a heck of a lot of stam and some nice, tasty dodge. Course I've been on an avoidance kick lately and +def seems much easier to make up for elsewhere than +dodge.

150 health is going to make more of a difference than +15 spirit.

19k is a long way to go for exalted with Sha'tar. Not exactly what I would consider "almost exalted", though you're human, I don't know if it makes that big of a difference or not. In the meantime the first boss from SL drops quite a nice shield and seems to do so fairly often.

We ran that run 3 times today no drop, how i got to revered about 5k in rep today, guild runs, There are several in my guild wanting to get exalted with sha'tar so it makes it pretty easy to get runs.

U talked about my relic, i couldn't seem to find any with defense on the, any ideas of a good one?

And are u a tanking pally as well? if so can u link your character so i can look at it please.

There are none with Defense Rating or anything like that. As a tank though what you will want to work towards getting is this:

http://wow.allakhazam.com/db/item.html?source=live;witem=29388

Requires Badges from Heroics/Karazhan/ZA. In the meantime here are a couple other nice Librams for a tank:

Thanks for the advice on the relics, Very nice setup u have. I was looking at your build, interesting. Obviously it works well, alot of good equipment u have as well. Im along ways from getting most of that stuff, but i will get there in time.

I was looking at your character and u had A'dal's song of battle on, were did u get that at? i can't find it.

Thanks for everyones advice, and sorry if i seem like a noob at times.

Serves ya right, you have the figurine of the collosus that took me MONTHS to get! Jadeskull only took slightly less but if you're running TK instances for Sha'tar rep that shouldn't be a problem for you to pick up along the way.

And no problem with the questions, everyone has to start somewhere. You just rubbed me wrong there for a bit with the healer comment.

Have fun!
#19 Dec 25 2007 at 12:57 PM Rating: Decent
Sorry about that, i did get the spell damage to weapon enchant today, i hadn't purchased the new rod to make it. Spent the gold today to get it, and enchanted my armor with the health, also picked up the enchant on my shoulders as well today. Just finished another bot run, no shield, wanna do mech for the legs.

Got the figurine on my 3rd SH run, i like it ok, it only heals for 120 and sometimes it does for 180 not sure what that is from? I don't think this gets a bonus from healing that i have.

It seems like you're on the right track in terms of what gear you should get.

To tank heroics, you should definitely be uncrittable (490 defense). You've almost reached that mark... 1 or 2 more tanking pieces to replace your weaker pieces should put you over 490. After that you'll need to stack avoidance and stamina.

Heroics are pretty hard. I'm uncrittable with about 96%-ish avoidance and my group still couldn't do Steamvaults =(. We did finish Underbog though. So just focus on getting gear from normal instances for now and you'll get to heroics soon enough.

Good luck! =D

#21 Dec 25 2007 at 8:01 PM Rating: Default
That's strange, I was still about .1% short of uncrittable and managed to OT Kara and tank Heroic BM and Mech w/o any problems. I'm up over 500 defense now (still best avoidance/budget, I believe) and will continue to stack as much as I can until I'm fully uncrushable w/ Holy Shield up. Can't get crushed by them bosses. That's druid turf and they can keep it.

That buff is something that occurs once Prince Kael'thas has been slain (kindof like the Onyxia head turn in buff). I just happened to log out in Shattrath while that buff was active :)

And yea, no problem with the questions. Always glad to put in some info where I can :)
