Math and Hunter PetsFollow

#1 Dec 22 2007 at 3:20 PM Rating: Good
So I'm trying to find a good hunter pet and have been experimenting with a few (boar, tallstrider, cat, wolf, bat and bear) and I'm looking at various sites and they have all kinds of mathematical formulas to figure out which pets are the 'best' pets. I have to admit I don't get it :-).

So I was wondering how many of you just experimented and found what you liked despite what someone else said was 'mathematically' the 'best pet'?

I've been doing a lot of soloing and basing my pet choices on this so far. I've so far not had any problem with any of the pets. I am on a PVP server and I will have to say that a boar's charge is certainly helpful! I've just now started researching what others say are the best choices for pets.

Now a couple questions (that I'm sure have already been asked...and I missed it while browsing):

Raptors...I hate coming up against raptors in PVP but have not yet run across a 'special' skill they have. Is it just the dps/dash combination that makes them a good PVP pet? Why do they seem to be more 'annoying' then cats or is it my imagination?

How helpful/viable are scorpids with their poison? Wolves with furious howl or pets with other special abilities for that matter?

How many of you have pets that you enjoy playing with that go against all the 'mathematical' formulas listed online? Which ones and why?

So far (mind you I'm only 30) I'm liking my bear and tallstrider for soloing. I liked the bat but the flapping kinda got in the way. My wolf does not seem to keep aggro quite as well but seemed to work nicely in a group the other day. I was thinking of going out and getting a scorpid and trying that out.

Well thanks in advance for your stories. I don't know that I'm really looking for advice about the best pet. I just want to hear about other people's experiences and thoughts. I especially want to hear from those of you who have 'unconventional' pets and have no problems with them despite all the disadvantages they have 'mathematically'.

Hope everyone is having a happy holiday season! Happy hunting :-)

Actually, the only real math I've seen is for top DPS pets, and you dont really need to worry about that until you start approaching 70. What helps is the pet's available skills, which you seem to be looking at already.

I'm partial to bats myself. Offer a good debuff in any circumstance, generate AoE threat making it easy to mend pet on overpulls, and have a fairly high amount of damage. Not to mention a level 70 bat gets in the way of enemies, blocking their screen at times.

Raptors and cats are quite similar (albeit I think one has more armor the other more health) except that cats can get prowl. It's probably in your mind. That being said, a ravager has higher damage than either of them, and would deal a lot more damage.
In PvP defensive stats are not important for a pet (since it wont be getting attacked), damage and speed are. If you're going to PvP, you absolutely need dash/dive, charge, or a ranged attack (lightning breath from wind serpents or poison spit from snakes).

Scorpids used to be top DD, but they got nerfed. Scorpid poison (and poison spit) are both good in PvP to keep enemies from bandaging/stealthing, but overall I'm not a fan of these pets as they do not get a speed enhancing ability.
Furious howl is good in azeroth, but in the TBC content there are no new ranks, and it gets outdated when you get to raids.
Lightning breath, gore, claw, and screech are amazing skills, especially for a BM hunter. LB/gore/claw deal high amounts of damage, and screech deals damage with the debuff.
Prowl is cool, but only situationally useful. Charge is good for PvP, and for generating threat - just turn it off if there's CC around because charge is a bit buggy. Turtles have shell shield which is great defensively, but I personally dont find it all that necessary since it gimps your pets threat generation as well.
