Lvl 57 Leveling QuestionFollow

#1 Dec 21 2007 at 4:54 PM Rating: Decent
I just came back to WoW after a several month break and I'm playing on my lvl 57 Lock.

I'm specced into demonology, to see my build check my armory link in the sig (if it doesn't work tell me)or use this - http://www.wowarmory.com/character-sheet.xml?r=Perenolde&n=Julinie

My current routine is to send in my Fel Guard, CoA + Corruption, Life Tap, Drain Life. After each mob I Life Tap to get my health/mana even or to get at least 3/4 mana and replenish my health from Drain Life on the next mob. Unless I decide to take on 2+ mobs at once I have practically no down time.

My question is for my successful grinding/questing should I switch to an Affliction build and will the Voidwalker do as good as my Fel Guard is now? Once I start going to Outlands will Affliction or Demonology dominate?

Any help and build ideas would be great.

Comparing the Voidwalker and Felguard, the Felguard deals much better damage. The Voidwalker is basically a meat shield (a pet with high life and armor, but doesn't deal much damage). Switching to Affliction build, your Voidwalker wouldn't be helping too much with killing a mob. It just distracts the mob from attacking you.

I'm a level 60 demo lock, though have yet to go to Outlands (trying to complete my Dreadsteed quests first), so I'm unsure which would be more effective.

The VW is my minion of choice when farming, but then again I drain-hunt. Drain tanking is more efficient, but I'm really good at drain hunting. When using a VW, the main watchword is aggro control. You absolutely do not want to pull hate away from your tank.

You will probably have to change you spell rotation order a bit, starting out with the DoTs that have the lowest amount of threat and building up from there. I try to stay away from immolate, since the initial hit has a high threat level. Still Immolate is there for higher level mobs and elites. If you use it, give your VW an additional taunt before you cast it.

After the mob has been DoTted up, Life tap and Drain Life (Drain Soul if you're shard farming). Result = no damage to you, full life, and very little mana loss. Whenever you VW starts to get down on health, have him consume shadows. If you are fighting multiple mobs, you might want to feed that VW a little of your health by using Health Funnel. Just keep in mind that healing your VW generates threat, which you want him to retain.

If you like using a pet then Felguard is definatly better for average grind than VW.

Voidwalker restrains you terribly on a grind, as you have to watch your damage output since you don't want to pull agro. Even with the Teir2 Demo Talent "Improved Voidwalker" its still entirely too easy to pull agro off him.

The Felguard is much much better about keeping agro. He wont do nearly as much damage as you, and he wont be able to take quite as much of a beating as the VW will, but he's a great balance for taking on Yellows/Greens.

Problem with him (both actually) is mana. Where the VW slows you down since you're waiting for his agro, the Felguard dishes out agro like a beast but at the cost of mana (something a real warrior doesn't have to worry about.) If you stick with Felguard make sure you have the Manafeed talent and try to get the Affliction Talent "Improved Lifetap." These combined will keep mana flowing to your pet.

In my experience (I stayed primarily Dark Pact affliction with Imp doing Fear Rotations and Drain Tanking) 50-58 were litterally twice as fast using Affliction, but the levels around the time of 59-65ish were a bit easier as Demology (especially Hellfire Peninusla which really sucks as a Fliction Lock.)

Past that it more depends what you're doing exactly, but places like Nagrand BEM and Zangamarsh are extremely easy as Affliction again (as well as Demo.)

Only if you are a heavy-handed wannabe nuker. I find it easy to have the VW maintain aggro, but I've had long practice (and I don't have any Demonology talents). It take finesse instead of raw power. My VW easily maintains aggro on multiple mobs as well. However, I wouldn't use my VW in instances, since he has all the vices of a hunter pet and none of the virtues.
