Ravage vs. Pounce/Mangle/ShredFollow

#1 Dec 21 2007 at 7:15 AM Rating: Decent
I was checking up on the next patch notes and saw that Ravage was getting a boost from 350% to 385%. I never use Ravage, so on a whim I checked out "another site" , just to see what it says about it, and it says: "If you wish to do the most damage possible, Ravage is preferable to Pounce."

Thus my question:
Which do you guys use, Ravage or Pounce & some combo?

I've been using pounce/shred/shred, or pounce/mangle/shred, figuring that getting more combo points (to get to "bite") was preferable to doing more initial damage (with "ravage"), but this new info seems to contradict that.

Or do you think it depends on if the mob is easily killable solo, elite, a raid boss, or whatever?

A 35% damage increase does not seem like it would really compensate. Sure, it might become the best opener for the most damage, but then again you sacrifice the stun factor, bleed factor, combo points factor.

I think the only time Ravage is useful is on a sitting clothy. (Cause of the guaranteed crit, of course) That or if the mob is immune to both stun and bleed. Or just stun, really, since it is the whole point of opening with Pounce.

I believe what they are saying is that Ravage does more damage than Pounce, which is true. However, that doesn't mean that it's the most effective opener to use in all situations.

When I'm soloing, I've found that Pounce->Mangle->Shred->Rip->Mangle->Mangle...Bite works better for me than Ravage->Mangle->Mangle...

In a group setting, that may not be the case. Stunning the target right off the bat may not be an ideal way for a tank to establish aggro, in which case Ravage would probably be better (assuming you wouldn't pull off of the tank when you used it). Also, on bleed immune mobs, ravage is by far the better damage opener, unless you really need the stun for some reason.
