Frost Mage raiding?Follow

#1 Dec 20 2007 at 2:52 PM Rating: Decent
I was wondering if frost mages are useful in raids.Without shatter and other effects that will make frost bolts crit.Or will i have to respec to fire or arcane for raiding?

There's some good pve talents in the frost tree too, it's not as good as fire, but it's good enough to do some of the early raids. If your group is really struggling for dps you should consider it, but generally it should be fine.

If you are just starting out in raiding it may be better to stay as frost as there is a bit more threat reduction in that tree than there is in the fire tree. That being said for the most damage the 10/48/3 build is the tops, although it does have some pre-requisites of having enough fire/spelldmg, spell hit, etc to make it reach that point. Prior to that it is debatable between a 40/0/21 or 40/21/0 build because arcane will assit you in making up for the lack of spelldmg, but it does not scale as well.

I hope this answers some of your questions.

Minor thread hijack, but how much spellhit/spelldmg do you think is required for good DPS in that spec (10/48/3)? Thanks.

164 is hit capped, so as close as possible to that.

164? Even with EP? Not bad. Is spelldmg negligible with that? Or should I have a certain amount of it? Thanks again.

EDIT: Got my numbers wrong. =S

for 10/48/3 you want to have around an unbuffed 800 fire damage (at least, I normally recommend close to 900).

10/48/3 = the raid dps spec. end of story.

with the recent and the upcoming changes (MSD nerf, ice block for all specs), frost and arcane are falling more behind compared to fire in pve.

until you reach 164 hit rating, +hit is the best stat to get. that does not mean you should ignore all others. and once you get 164 +hit, you should keep stacking spelldamage, crit, spellhaste (not if you spam scorch) plus some stamina and int but that will mostly come with your gear improvements anyway.

you can do kara as frost, but later on you will just be slowing down your raid if you stay frost. i suggest switching to fire early on for two reasons:
- you can practice playing fire spec.
- you have time to adapt your gear to the spec.

When(/if?) the next patch is ever released, deep frost is closing the gap a bit on deep fire with icy veins. This may change the uber 10/48/3 spec to something like 2/4x/11.

That is one thing that I am excted to see, I haven't had much of a chance to get on the PTR and do some Dr. Boom testing, but it could be interesting to say the least.

I wish Dr. Boom was a lvl 73... that way we could test +hit on him too.

We had our Frost mage in Kara this week with us for the first time now that he's keyed. With having him and a Shadow Priest in the group with us the DPS was great. There shouldn't be a problem with it if you wanted to stay frost as long as your guild doesn't give you a hard time.

Gratz! It is only kara, so you can do frost there, but just think how much *better* the DPS would have been if the mage had been 10/48/3? That's the problem with frost, it has an opportunity cost.
