Going to start BG's.....need adviceFollow

I'm a lvl 69 Prot spec Pally atm but I'm going to start running BG's just to try something new for a while. I've heard that Prot is a pretty lousy way to go in the battlegrounds so I was just wondering if it would be better to go either Ret or Holy....or *shudder* a hybrid build. Also any advice on talent builds and stats to strive for would be appreciated. Thanks in advance for your time.

i'll admit i'm not the best at PVP, but based on most threads i've seen on here i'd reccomend holy. ret can be a lot of fun, but to be honest, its not an easy spec to play right and if you don't get the right gear you'll be hating life.

i think a pretty common pvp spec is 41/20/0 but i'd have defer to someone else for specs. there's probably some good info in the FAQ....

i think most would reccomend against prot for most bgs except maybe AV.

if you do go holy, you'll want as much, +healing, stam and int as possible. i think mp5 is less usefull in PVP than it is in PVE. also some spell crit would be useful.

Some while back I did some BGs (mind you, NOT arena!) with my prot paladin. Basically I threw out heals while standing inside enemy lines (which is all you can do as prot really) and you can not imagine the amount of times I was attacked by melee enemies thinking I was holy. They were in for a big surprise when I would not go down fast.

It IS fun and I could stay prot without respeccing every time, but generally speaking Holy is MUCH better. Healing for the win. (mind you, from the back, not standing amidst enemies like my example. /smile

Either way, you are prot now anyway, try a few games and see if you are having fun/contributing enough. You can always respec after those.

Your capacity as a damage absorber while playing a prot pally is pretty hard to beat. I have had some excellant fun defending locations and holding back 3-4 horde for some time as they can't see the healer behind me. =)

It depends on which BGs you want to do and what you want to do. Occasionally I do some BGs, and it varies which. Mostly I throw out heals and die slowly (if at all) as that seems to me to be my best contribution.

But it is fun to be healing everyone in the flag room and then AS the flag ninja so everyone can catch them in WSG Smiley: grin.

Prot actually isnt too bad in BGs. You can tank in AV and you can survive fairly well in other BGs making a good defender for nodes. If you do want to spec holy, i would try the build that my pally has in my sig.

Ret isnt bad in BGs either though i cant help you with a build for that. maybe check the faq.

What everyone else said.

You can also try a Shockadin-type build where you stack spelldamage and healing, and allocate your 20 non-Holy points between Prot and Ret depending on how you want to slant your playstyle (more offensive punch or harder to kill). My shockadin does fine in BGs -- quite survivable and I can also kill people, and always have tons of mana to heal myself and others.

I thought prot pallies made good flag carriers in WSG, no? Everyone kept insisting that my holydin self had to grab the flag just because I was in plate, even if I was the only healer in the group.

You might have a good time in Arathi Basin as a prot pally. Defending nodes is a bit like tanking, where your lack of ranged damage and poor mobility doesn't hurt you as much as it might elsewhere.

Remember too that while healing is great and all, you also contribute a lot by constantly buffing, bubbling, cleansing, stunning, interrupting, etc. those around you.

I'm ignoring AV only because my experiences there have been very limited.
