i have been having problems lately with TPS, namely that my TPS sucks. part of the problem is my block value, and the other part is my hit%. it happens often enough that when i pull a mob or taunt it over to me and hit shield slam+revenge/devastate to open, i will miss shield slam and sometimes either the white hit or revenge/devastate. i calculated my block value to be about 250, my hit rating is 25 (1.5%), and right now unbuffed i have 12624 health. i was thinking of re-gemming for hit in 5 gem slots, which would put me right at 12024 health (still raid viable) and just above 5% hit (so specials will not miss). i have asked my kara group if they felt as if they had to hold back considerably behind my tanking, so i will know their opinion soon. in heroics it feels as if dps is so slow at times, though i'm not sure if this is because it is subpar to begin with or it is because they have to hold back too much...

edit: when i tank in kara, i spec full prot if paired with a druid tank, this last run he main tanked nightbane and prince as i was both unfamiliar and undergeared for them; if i am paired with another warrior tank, i spec a DW fury OT build. my main concern is heroics as i have yet to get T4 pieces off curator or prince (have not been to gruul's yet), and there is still a lot of badge gear available for me.

3.5% hit for 600 hp is a great trade off, if you are lower on TPS. Another thing to consider is Crit instead of hit. Since it affects your hit table in a very similiar fashion. And then even, you could socket for agi and come out with dodge, crit and armor.

I put on crit/hit gear for trash mobs, since you don't need exactly 490 defense, to be crit proof against <=72 elite mobs.

The best way to get tps though is shield block value, or switching to a slow high dps mh for devastate, rotating shield slam, revenge and devastate.

250 SBV is lower than desired, but is not sub-par for initial tanking for kara.

thanks for pointing that out devious. I had forgotten that 490 def was the desired def for level 73 mobs. Since most mobs (if not all mobs) in heroics are <= level 72, that should give me some room to play with defense. Just need to look up some numbers...

On another note, iirc I have 10% crit in defensive stance. Is that adequate or should I aggressively pursue more crit?

Edit: a quick look at the kara gear checklist says that 490 defense skill is needed to be uncrittable by a level 73 boss, so to be uncrittable against a level 72 mob you would only need 483 defense? Assuming 490 defense/73 = 6.71*72 = 483.3.....

i re-gemmed five 12 stam gems with 8 hit gems, and with the hit rating on the crystalline kopesh, brought my hit rating to 49 with my avoidance set on. after replacing the barbed choker of discipline with the worgen claw necklace, and moroes' lucky pocket watch with dabiri's enigma, i brought my hit rating up to 90 (though avoidance went down from ~36% to ~31%, and health from 12.2k to 12k. defense in both sets was still >490).

the results:

tanking calculator in Hmech, my TPS went from an average peak of 600 to an average peak of 800, and none of my specials missed.
