I've never really got a proper grasp of the WoW maths, despite reading the various faq's and stickies (my mind just seems to zone out...), so was hopign someone could let me know if it is worth having over 490 def?

I still need to get my avoidance up to 102%, but my defence seems to have skyrocketed to 520-odd when in full tanking gear!! Is it worth having that much? I'm only running kara and heroics atm, but hopefully the guild will get onto gruul and beyond in the new year.

Should I swap out my def gems for dodge ones?

If your avoidance isn't at 102.4% yet, then definitely keep the DEF. Defense adds the most total avoidance point for point of anything except Shield Block Rating, which is a fairly iffy stat (and you can't Gem for it. =p)

490 is required so that you become uncrittable, anything beyond that will up your avoidance a little... but not nearly as much than if you had gotten block or dodge or parry rating in it's place.

Per point, defense adds more avoidance than any other stat, though, right?

I assumed it didn't... but I generally had to get a ton of block rating to get to uncrushable. So I didn't really do any math on it.

Made a bit of a boo-boo in my first post, so here it is re-edited.

A really good read for this is the "Defence and Mitigation" sticky, but it is long and you need to understand the math a bit.

So here is the shorter form:

+60def on items gives +25 defence on your character sheet.
That gives you 3% total avoidance(be missed/parry/dodge)and 1% shield block rating.

+block rating is about 7.5 times as good as +def for block rating, but it gives NO total avoidance. Actually works out to about 2 times as good as +def if you are only looking for uncrushable.

+dodge rating is about 5 - 10% better than +def for total avoidance but it gives no +shield block.

+ parry is about 10 - 15% worse than +def for total avoidance and it gives no +shield block.

If you are past 490 defence and aiming for uncrushable then +block rating is usually the best choice, even over +def. After that though +def or +dodge looks to be the better choice.

+Def is better for a pally then everything save +block, so if your going to change out your Def gems for anything, it should be for stam.

Okay, I've got a question on Defense as well. I'm lvl 62 now and climbing. I have gotten up to 8556 armor and 356 defense. What is your *BASE* defense at lvl 70? I have seen the math-craft sticky that has all the numbers in it, but it didn't say what you start with if you have 0 armor on. I was wondering this to figure out how much +defense gear you actually need to become uncritable, then uncrushable.

um, unlike profession skills, weapon and defense skills max out at 350. so you'd need 140 more defense. which is 400+ defense rating on your gear. i think...

Yes, the max defense skill is 350, unless you have 5/5 points in "Anticipation" talent, in which case your defense will max out at 370.
