Me and my friend have been levelling prot warrior/holy pally combo for a while, doing mainly instances. Doing SM, we got a mage who would use CoC, blizzard, and arcane explosion when we had a single or double mob pull, but would frostbolt spam if we had 3+ enemies.
Then we hit RFD, and got a mage who had a mana pool higher than my friend's pally (who, excepting that mage, has had the highest mana pool of anyone in any group we've done) who managed to go OOM every fight even though he's frost. He pulled off me fairly easily (since he focused on burst damage) and like the guy above, would use a lot of AoEs on single-mob pulls.
Then me and my friend figure we'll switch it up, I'll heal and he'll tank, so we make a pair of druids. Going through RFC, we get a mage that would body-pull, would polymorph the WRONG target (and we needed CC since my friend had no AoE threat generation yet), and would pull marked targets into combat even if we got lucky and they didn't get pulled on the initial pull (i.e. 4 targets close to each other, we mark all 4, but only 2 get pulled, he'd grab the other two).

I know instances at this level are where you're supposed to learn, but still...why would someone use an ability designed against multiple mobs on single targets, and vice versa? Why would someone purposefully make the fight harder (but not faster)?

To awnser your question, the mage in question was an idiot.

Although I have to say, aoe spells look awesome if you're not sober. Except AE, that one goes too fast. They're not awesome enough to ***** up instance parties, not for me at least, but it could be an explanation.

I bet the mages you ran into loved the look of AoE spells, so would use them often. However, they would be afraid to use them with multiple mobs because they would pull aggro. Or something silly like that.

Yes, there are ****** mages out there. Just like there are ****** Pallys and ****** warriors. Sorry for your bad luck. Don't give up though, a well-played mage is awesome!!!

I ran into similar issues when I ran Deadmines. Once I got a warrior who would be constantly pulling mobs and not letting us drink. A mage with no mana = useless. We tried reasoning with him, but to no avail. He would also be contantly complaining that everyone else in the group sucked. "It's the DPS's fault. It's the Healer's fault. blah blah blah." We almost kicked him from the group a few times, but decided to keep him on as cannon fodder (yes, we let him die many times so that his repair bill will be high). Once we got to Van Cleef, the healer stopped healing him, let him die, and we kicked him from group before the end of the fight so he couldn't loot or get credit :) It was funny.

You just have to laugh at the fools you run into, or you will go crazy. Especially at the lower levels.

Me too...I thrive off the suffering of the stupid. I also agree that the mage in question was stupid. Probably an Alt of someone who had trouble progressing on his main because no one woul dplay with him.

My Mage Alt is 52, and I see that behavior occasionally from ither mages when I group with them, right after a damage meter posting, so maybe the guy you played with had something to prove, maybe thats why the massive burst pulling.

There are good mages out there, it's just a question of digging them up.

I agree with the other posters, that mage was a moron.

Like all classes, there will be people who don't know how to play them.
*cough* huntards *cough*
You just need to find a mage who knows what he's doing, and invite him to your instance groups.

To share MY mage horror story I will set the scene with the instance of Blackrock Depths. A warrior, priest, rogue, and 2 mages (one of them was me, the other was an idiot) were in a group. As soon as we start the instance, the OTHER mage starts running up to the mobs and hitting him with his staff. Puzzled, I ask him why he's not using spells and he says, "I don't want to waste my mana on trash mobs." Don't want to waste your mana? THAT'S WHY YOU CAN CONJURE UP WATER AND MANA GEMS! Needless to say, I left that group before my repair bill caused me to file for bankruptcy.

There is no such thing as a good mage. There are only horrible mages, mediocre mages, and great mages.

And I'm the latter!

The only times I go OOM in an instance is when there's a boss fight or some kind of pull that gets all screwed up (meaning, pulling 3 groups at once instead of one), and believe me, I don't have the biggest mana pool at level 70. Sounds like you're just stuck with idiot mages.

Quoted for bloody truth. I have the habit of playing while drunk, so I have a somewhat strange outlook on things as a Mage in instances. I warn the tank, letting him know I am drunk, and then proceed to prioritize my spells in the order of shinyness instead of usefulness. After a polymorph I can find myself spending ten seconds doing nothing but giggling to the memory of the mage in the WoW intro Polymorphing the tauren. After that, I go into an AoE frenzy while going "BURN! FREEZE! BURN! FREEZE! GET THE SNIFFLES!", then realize I popped my own sheep and proceeds to polymorph the target even though it is the last mob. And continue trying to sheep it while the tank tries to build threat on it.

Ah well. At least I warn the group beforehand.
