Another Shieldless Tank storyFollow

So I'm in Honor Hold yesterday with my mage and I see a "Looking for 1 more for BF last boss". So I jump at it and get in. We run to the end ramp going down to the boss to kill those big guys.

Group:
Mage (me)
Priest
Pally (Healer)
Warrior (Tank)
....Hunter maybe was the 5th ?

The pally has a shield on so I instantly think he's the tank and the priest is healing. First the priest start pulling and the Fury warrior runs in to tank the big guys on the ramp going down to the boss without a shield (just 2 1h weapons equipped). Half of us die but we end up killing them all.

I ask in party chat "Do we have a tank?" and they all say yes. Then the boss fight the Fury warrior is tanking the boss again without a shield. He dies but we end up killing the boss... So I say "You know tanking usually requires a shield and Def. stance, maybe then you won't die on every pull."

It scares me to think that he'll be tanking all the time like that. I hope eventually these people realize they can't DW tank.

Yeah,

I have heard of issues like this before. I am DW Fury - but I carry tank gear with me at all times just in case I get a random /w asking me to tank. However, I still get beat up a bit with a shield and def. stance. I can't imagine the thought of a DW warrior tanking in berserker stance and DW'ing. But, I guess each to his own.

While the shieldless tank in the OP was clearly being a noob, aren't there fights where it's actually preferable to tank without a shield? ie where all incoming damage is magical?

Or does spell reflect end up being more valuable for these bosses than the extra damage and threat?

Tank? I'm not even sure I'd want to have him as DPS in a group. I'm far from being elitist as far as gear goes but I know he should be better geared just with quest rewards (not including the nice stuff you get from instance quests).

This has to be an alt that farms leather and makes stuff for other characters because that is the only explanation I can think of for having a Warrior be a Skinner/Leatheworker.

Shieldless tanks. Oh god. Not again...

I actually had a party to SL with an Arms warrior with the crafted two-handed sword. Me playing my rogue, but having a priest, felt very sorry for the priest who tried to heal trough the damage. Not all was lost, mainly with me stunlocking/kiting 1 or more mob(s) at any given time (thank god for cippling poison), up to the second boss (downed the first boss after 2 tries, only reason I stayed was cause a friend needed something, can't even remember what) where the warrior changed to Fury, claiming the boss, and I quote; "cannot be tanked and only damage can keep agro". I tried to remind him of the fact that he, as a warrior, had taunt, Intervene, etc etc, but he already charged. We only just survived to the first MC, where the MC'd warrior popped recklessness, Death Wish and Sweeping Strikes. After 3 auto attack crits , 2 sword wep. spec crits and a cleave crit, 3 of us where already dead.

I don't usually give a damn what spec warriors are. I've seen Arms-warriors tank better then full prot ones. I've seen fury do what prot could not. Very frankly, I don't give a damn if they spec like Mental Frog's warrior (although that DID make me want to scratch my eyes out), as long as they can tank.

And, for the LOVE of GOD, tanking isn't JUST holding agro; its holding agro, while -taking as little damage as possible-.

Every time a warrior tanks without a shield, God kills a kitten. Feel free to quote that.

I just made a post about this today.

I know for me gearwise right now, if I am equipping my sheild.
I am not getting hit hard enough, and what not to even tank correctly.
(Non Heroics)
So Ive been tanking lately with my Suneater in the main hand, and a Decent Dagger in my off hand.

And I have been holding aggro a ton better, and my healer told me, he is still throwing very little heals on me.

My armor only went from 13kish to 10kish.

Mind you I still DW Tank in def. stance n all. But it does work alot better for me in non-heroics.

Sometimes in the bossfights though, I will pop the sheild back on. I do keep the sheild in my hot bar.

But for the most part - I have been rolling with out it.

This is me: http://www.wowarmory.com/character-sheet.xml?r=Wildhammer&n=Xiaolinmonk

So I dont know you, would have to group with me to see how well it works.
but it does.

I can see what your saying about non-tanks trying to DW tank.. I could see where that would be a problem, but for us speced as tanking, you should give them a shot, and let them try - because it does work.

The only reason I ever tried it, was cuz I felt like crap when my group started pulling all the mobs from me due to my loss of threat generated because I couldent keep my rage up.

Hope I made some sense..

or the single piece of nature resist or the fire resist or the 'of the wolf'. I swear he's got one of everything. Even his talents reflect that 'I don't know what I need so I'll get a little bit of everything' nonsense.

I love the single point in Sword spec...wielding an axe.
Look for him to respec 20-20-21 when he hits 70 - call it the Balanced Build and sticky it.

Cheers!

He even used a sharpening stone on it! Such a waste.

Same here. I've been running heroics a lot lately and when I went back to normal instances, I wasn't being hit hard enough to keep up the rage. DW in def stance helps a lot with rage gen. I just spam HS instead of SS and put the shield back on for bosses.
