I have a mage, rogue and other assorted characters, but selecting weapons and armor for my pally is one of the most confusing things. For example, at exalted with Honor Hold, you can get one of 2 weapons, Honor's Call or Blade of the Archmage.

The mageblade has +159 damage on it, but only 41.3 DPS... Honor's call has 81.8 DPS and increases 2 important stats, defense rating and hit rating... which one do you use?

I'm a prot pally and plan to be for the foreseeable future, so do I get the sword that hits twice as hard?

um, i know i'm not prot, but my understanding is that most prot pallies get their spell damage from their sword since its usually the peice of gear with the most SD on it. white hits aren't the threat generator. its your spell damage. if you get a SD weapon and give it an SD enchant you should have all the spell damage you need to generate threat. that will let you focus purely on tanking warrior/pally gear for the rest of it.

Spell damage = threat.

I would say the Archmage is hands dowm detter than Honor's Call.

Don’t concern yourself with weapon DPS it means nothing to a prot pally. A Protadin’s DPS comes from reflective damage (meaning that as mobs hit you they take damage for it) and spell damage.

I also think that the Crystalforged Sword and the Continuum Blade are better choices because of the added stamina

I would also advise that you check out the FAQs up top...

Thanks... I have checked the FAQs, the real reason I was wondering about this was because of the large DPS difference in the weapons. I mean, one of them was DOUBLE the other and I don't know that the amount of threat generated by SoR was enough to offset the amount of additional white damage from the sword, plus the fact that it had +defense and +hit, which will be very important to me in instances and such.

From what tool said, I could just get a good +damage sword and then concentrate on plain old tanking gear that a warrior would use?

Pally gear is the most confusing gear ever. As a mage, I knew almost exactly what I wanted and such, with a pally, you want some spell damage, some mp5, defense, stam (but who doesn't want that), melee hit, spell hit and plate. As a rogue, I also knew what I wanted, but then rogues and mages don't really change a lot about their gear between specs. Pallys have to carry around a bag of gear with just +healing on it (I have a set, in case I have to heal). I find I sell a lot less of the quest rewards, as if it is better than what I have, then I can use it, otherwise, is it better than a healing piece I have in my bag...

Yhar. Just get a decent weapon (Crystalforged sword, Arena mace are probably the best two w/o raiding) slap 40 spell damage on it, and then go get prot warrior junk. Wait... why am I offering prot advice? Bleh.

lol! Okay, when I get to 70, I'll look into getting those swords, in the mean time I'll be on the lookout for caster blades and warrior stuff.

As a prot paladin, you don't need anything to do with spells EXCEPT for spell damage. After that, think warrior for your tanking gear.

Prot paladin needs spell damage, defense rating, a ton of avoidance stats, stamina and armor.

Spell damage, get it on your weapon and through enchants.

Defence, avoidance, stamina, and armor tends to all stick together on the gear. Look at Thels' sticky and read through it, it'll open your eyes way more than anything I could say without making a 5 page essay out of it.
