I am very limited in PvP, but I have ran some Arena. I just lack the gear to be good. I've used a couple different level 70 pets.
I have gone in with a few different pets(windserpent, boar, cat, owl) I've noticed a few things that are Arena relevant.
I've come to the conclusion that the best pets for Arena are those with Dash/Dive, Claw, Charge, Screech are the best arena pet abilities there.
Dash/Dive for obvious reasons, to get to the enemy faster.
Charge another obvious reason, same as dash and dive, but with the added stun.
Claw is another reason. It's a fast, fast, fast attack. Sick a pet on a caster, claw on auto and laugh as you see that casters cast bar repeatedly drop turning a 1.5 second cast into a 3 second cast.
Screech actually works pretty well in Arena for those pesky rogues and warriors.
I use my pet as a form of CC with the added bonus of DPS. If there is a caster, that is who my pet goes for, no questions about it. Like I said with claw. Watch a healer try to cast a lesser heal only to have it take 3 seconds instead of 1.5, it's amazing.
Charge is another amazing ability. It's a second Intimidate for me. It can work wonders as well.
As far as ravagers go, they top DPS in long fights. Gore beats out Bite over a period of time. Arenas are fast pased and quick, I doubt gore would be a factor.
I personally go with an owl. It has dive, claw, and screech, +7% damage modifier. Not as good as a cat when it comes to total DPS, but it comes with screech that reduces the AP of nearby enemies.
I would go with a Boar before the cat too, because of the charge, but that's just me.
Owl is my favored pet too. Mainly because a big black owl named Shuriken goes good with a dark-haird broody blood elf, but also for the reasons you mentioned, and lastly flying pets, as mentioned above, are great destractions.
In BGs, it's fun to send your owl up a tower after someone. They don't see you yet, so they'll usually start attempting to deal with this big flappy thing, not noticing the skinny elf running up the stairs, much to their demise.
