Tanking PrinceFollow

On my second run through Kara my guild let me be main tank. I tanked everything without problems until we got to Prince where I just couldn't stay alive past him getting to 30%. Everything would be going fine then from nowhere he would get 10k damage in 2 or 3 hits and I would basically die instantly. I think on the third attempt we could of done it but the healers went oom (I forgot to bless them with wisdom, doh) because I popped my trinkets at the right time. Even then though, it would have been incredibly close and I probably still would have died.

I know my gear is lacking a bit for maintanking Kara, but it was fine for all the other bosses. I have my spellpower enchanted Kings defender with wizard oil for Prince (and curator) and don't suffer any threat problems.

What sort of HP\armour should I be aiming for before I can realistically tank Prince and have a chance of success? I’m still mostly in dungeon blues with a sprinkling of epics but the good badge rewards (75 badges each) seem a long way off. Are there any great drops that can be picked up from a heroic boss?

My guild were quite happy for me to tank him, even though a warrior wanted to sub in (I had been on time, and potted and fooded everyone for all 3 nights of the raids so they let me do it), but obviously I don't want to be letting them down next time I step up to the plate.

Edit: fully raid buffed I was at about 16k armour and 14.5k health.

Dont melee prince in phase 2. Simply keep Cons and Holy Shield up, judge every now and then and with him hitting so fast (2 weaps) you will get enough threat easily. What's most likely causeing you to die in a short manner of time are parries by yourself.
(on a side note: The dps on phase 1 should be steady anyways, burst starts in phase 2, so you should have a nice threat-buffer anyways)

If that doesn't work... There's not much to do than gear up I guess:P

Ah well, today has been a dark day for me as a tankadin. The guild decided to have another bash at Prince, so we cleared our way up there and I was told the warrior was going to tank. I duely handed over my tanking pots and food and let him tank and we one-shotted it :\

Now I get the feeling after what was said yesterday in gchat (pallies can't tank prince, you need a warrior) that everyone is going to think a Warrior is a better tank. However, today I was healing with the other healers, so the Warrior had 4 healers on him (1 holy pala, 2 holy priests, 1 tankadin) which meant the main healers mana was able to last alot longer (I took over when one priests mana got low so they could let it build up again), plus I blew lay on hands at one point when he was gonna die.

I paid for all my pots and food (+600 armour elixer, +15 all stats elixer, and spicey crawdad), while he turned up with non of these, and used mine free of charge. Then his t4 helm dropped to make him an even better tank!!!

Our stats (armour\hp) are the same atm, although my def is way higher, but I'm sure it was the fact he had 4 healers on him and they had the practice of 3 runs yesterday that got him through it.

I just hope im not shunted off to the side now after successfully maintanking everything pre-prince after the guild watched the warrior survive where I died yesterday :(

If I could just offer some casual advice, I suggest that you try not to project a problem where there isn't one. I'm tempted to say "man up and soldier on" but I think you're analyzing the situation fairly rationally and you know it. If your guildies are as smart as you are, they can draw the same conclusions you're reaching about why the last try, with the warrior MT, succeeded while the efforts in which you MTed didn't.

There's one more point I don't think you've noted yet, or at least not out loud, and it's that what this situation might come down to is that you're able to make a bigger contribution to the raid in your secondary role (healing tankadin) than he can contribute with his secondary role (whatever a non-MT protwarrior does). It needn't reflect on you or your skills at all if it were simply the case that a warrior tank is not very useful to the raid except when boss-tanking.

Just my two cents. Keep at it and let someone else spark the guild drama. Don't be that guy.

Gratz on your centennial post by the way (#100).

Are you uncrushable? Prince crushes a LOT and if you're not uncrushable/uncritable then yeah, you're gonna get tooled by him.

Yeah, tanking Prince when not uncrushable in even the beginning of phase two can cost you a ********.

Holy Shield has the most importance in this fight. Keep it up, as it has priority over all other abilities.

Ha, people are using my strategy. 'Cause it's awesome and it works for newer guilds who haven't outgeared the instance yet.

Aye, I think I was maybe being a bit emotional(!) last night, it's always hard to see a warrior beat something that you couldn't but I guess it's because my secondary role is more useful than theirs (melee dps always seem to die on Prince).

We started another run today and hopefully they will let me have a bash at prince when we get there, I think I'll try Jack's tactic of not meleing during phase 2; i didn't realise that attacking him gave him extra opportunities to hit you.... That added with a couple of extra epics from the run and I reckon we can down him :)

Hang in there youll get it!

looking over your gear, ect.. I see 102.7 ish total avoidance while holy shield is up. So your barley uncrushable. I Gotta ask are you making sure HS is refreshed as your top priority? it should be. even a sec down is long enough for a nasty thrash/ crush combo. which is what it sounds like is happening.

Admitily your gear/ hp is a lil lacking for this fight. Some Blue pieces like Jadeskull breast plate and devil shark cape will make a big difference,
and of course Kara/badge epics are even better, but we all have to start some where... your gear will get better with time.

Some consumables to make fight more managable:
Nightmare seed at start of Phase 2
Scroll of Agility V
Elixir of greater Agility
Fort/ earthen elixirs

Well we got to Prince again last night, I decided to let the warrior tank him, thinking my healing is more useful to the raid than his melee dps. He wiped twice (mhahahaa!), so I stepped up and we one shotted him. I didn't attack at all in phase 2, just kept holy shield up and spammed consecration for aggro. There were a couple of hairy moments but pots and healthstones (and lay on hands) pulled me through!

We're heading up for my first encounter with the kara dragons tonight!

Sweet! Gratz on taking Prince all the way down this time :D Maybe one day my guild will let me tank him instead of backup heal too >.>

And gl with the dragons as well. Netherspite is a really fun fight when people know what they are doing, else it can get out of control really fast. I'm betting you'll be fine though. Come back and tell us how it goes :)

To all the naysayers who said my strategy was stupid for phase 2, I don't want to say I told you so but..... :P

Is it necessary for people who have cleared it a few times? No. Is it helpful for the first kill where no one is really outgearing the instance? Well I'll just let the anecdotal evidence speak for itself.

Anyway, aside from stroking my e-peen a bit, congrats on the kill and I hope you go farther and farther.
