I'm fairly new to hunters, this being my first one past lvl 11, and I have noticed that my pet does not gain skill points very fast.

I read that it is supposed to be lvl*(loyalty -1), which at level 33, is 33*5 right (165), or am I missing something?

Is that calculated only every 5 or 10 levels and all levels in between they just get a couple points?

Remember that skills pets have when you train them will remove skill points, meaning that when it's tamed it will start with a negative number of points.

That I do know. I have had my pet since level 20, I have just noticed that the last few levels he has gained very few skill points. He gained 150 at level 30, I trained the skills, but since then he has only gained about 20 points. I was just wondering if they only gain the chunks every 10 levels instead of each level.

Look at your formula from your OP. Level * (Loyalty-1). So if your pet is Loyalty level 6, you will gain 5 points pet level. Every level. Without question. You just might not notice it as the points required to train new skills are getting larger and larger and you're still only gaining 5 points a level.

Maybe I am missing something completely, but is level the actual level of the pet or just 1? Because at level 30, thats 30 * (6-1) = 150, 31 * (6-1) = 155, etc.

The reason I am questioning this because at 30 I got the new armor, stamina, and resistances. I am 33 and still don't have all the resistances learned because I do not have enough skill points. Is that how its supposed to be?

I am just curious how this all works with the pets. The way I read it is that I get points every level = level * (loyalty - 1), now I know that seems a bit much, but every level does that subtract out the skills I am already using and then add the difference to the total points available? Because if that was the case then this would all make sense.

You can never max out all the resistances. Training points for pets are similar in that way to your own character build. You have to pick and choose what you think will improve your pet the most for the beasts you are fighting. In one day, I might actually go so far as to respecc my pet five or more times to keep him optimal for the type of mob I am going after.

You got it right there, stop trying to over think it!!

Yes, you are not supposed to be able to train max rank of attacks, armor, stamina, and resistances at once because your pet would be a little OP. You need to give your pet a "build" and figure out where you want to spend his points.

I think I know what you mean, but you kind of worded it weird, or I might not just be reading it right. Anyways, I'll take a shot at it.

Let's say example TalentA (Rank 1) costs 5 TP. TalentA (Rank 2) costs 15 TP. You have 30 TP. You train your pet with Rank 1 and have 25 TP left. Now, you train your pet with Rank 2 and you will have 15 TP left. This is because the 5 TP you spent on Rank 1 count towards the purchase of Rank 2.

Hope this helps.

Happy Hunting!

A few people have referred to "pet builds" in this thread. Petopia has a really good pet skill calculator which lets you distribute points in a similar fashion to character talent calculators. This may prove useful to some folks out there...check it out.

I think I am confusing myself...this is how I literally translated the points system....assuming loyality level is 6

Level 30 = 150
Level 31 = 155
Level 32 = 160
Level 33 = 165

Now, my problem is nowhere did it tell me that this is the amount of talent points you will have at that level. I think I realized I over looked that. Because taking that literally I should have 630 points if I didn't spend any.

Now I realize you just get 5 per level if you are at 6 loyality, which would be a better way to say it.

So basically per level you get...

Loyality 6: 5
Loyality 5: 4
Loyality 4: 3
Loyality 3: 2
Loyality 2: 1
Loyality 1: 0

Yep, I'm pretty sure you understand it now.

When you pet dings you get 5 points (at level 6 loyalty).

When your pets loyalty gains a level you get points equal to the pet level.

So at level 30, a pet ding would give you 1 - 5 points but a loyalty ding would give you 30 points.

When assigning points does it already deduct for the abilities a pet you just tamed knows? If you tame a panther that knows like for example prowl 1 and claw 3 and you get it up to loyalty 6 will it already deduct the points for those abilities as if you had actually selected for the pet to learn them? I've heard of people having to clear their pets talents because you might tame a pet that already has something like cower which you don't ever think it will need so I assume that it does already deduct the points but I just want to be sure.

Yes it does, which is why when you tame some pets it starts out with a negative amount of points.
