So I Re-specced....Follow

On a whim I altered my spec a bit tonight and really the change has been lingering in my mind. Previously, and for as long as I've been a Hunter, I was attracted to the 41/0/20 combination, full Beast Mastery and then 20 points into Survival with a focus on all the trap improvements. I'd gotten very used to it. But tonight after a number of terribly woeful arena battles I respecced for more damage.

I changed to 41/20/0. Out farming and leveling up my boar (so far up to 65) I noticed a definite increase in my overall dps output. The 2k crits were nice and I'm now sitting on 18.34% critical strike chance. However, I just kind of feel like I'm missing my old Survival talents. The increased maximum range, improved wing clip, improved feign death, and of course, the talents to increase trap duration and reduce resists. What I'm really trying to ask is...

Did I gimp myself for trapping in instances? I run PuGs here and there and occasionally join up with guildmates for heroics which, I must say, are INTENSE experiences. Sure my dps has been upped but was it worth it? I know a majority of Hunters go the 41/20/0 route (hence why I have seen it referred to as the "cookie cutter" spec) but well, it's new to me and I'm not sure if I made a good choice. Guess if anything I'm just coming here for some reassuring words. Honest opinions though would be appreciated, whether reassuring or not. I'd rather have blunt truth than clouded shoulder-patting.

I spent a lot of gold respeccing a few times, trying different combinations. For a brief while I liked the 30/31/0 format but I found in PvP I was sorely missing Bestial Wrath to get me out of CC. Scattershot was nice but it didn't impress me as much as I thought it would. That could very well be my own fault for not giving it enough time.

Thoughts, suggestions, flames? I'd love to hear what everyone has to say.

You'll still be able to trap pretty well, you'll just have to prepare more. I run with my roommates prot pally most of the time and he knows well enough to give me at least 20-25 seconds after I lay my trap in case I get a resist in a heroic. As long as you can keep it on ice for a few second then kite till you CD wears off you should be fine. Just make sure your tank understands hunter CC and how it works.

In normal instances I find it doesn't really matter. Most of the time if something breaks early I don't even bother doing anything till the CD is up, though I run with a lot friends that I trust so I know that if necessary (which 90% of the time it isn't) heals are coming and that nobody will do anything stupid.

Just takes a bit of practice. Run out and find something that won't kill you and practice trapping it in a certain amount of space. If you can still keep it frozen indefinitely you'll be fine.

Go play around in normal BF. Those first few pulls are good for practice. Keep on orc frozen, burn down the imp while your pet tanks the other orc.

I'm 41/20/0 and i'm able to trap pretty much anything i need to trap.
Its not as easy as it was with 0/21/40, and it takes a bit more time and thought but else then that there's no problem with trapping as 41/20/0.

I'm 41/20/0, and I only have 1 piece of beast lord. With preparation, I can chain trap something 3 times, which is more than enough for even a mediocre heroic group. The resists are a pain, but if you wait for your cooldown before pulling, it shouldn't be a problem.

I ran heroic UB today with some guildies, and I was trapping up until after the second boss (everything was immune after that). I got two unlucky resists the whole time, but I was able to retrap right away, because I was prepared.

But there are times when I really miss having a few points into SV. The trapping is truely sexy, but even when I went full SV for a while, I never needed to trap 1 mob for more than three times.

I respecced as well to a 0/41/20 build and shortly after ran SV. I had a guild that I went with try to get me into my guild because I kept my mob trapped through a series of 2 add groups during our approach to the final boss there.

The serpent chick that fears kept fearing our druid into the next group of mobs and they were running to much to get them where they wanted to. I silenced them every chance I had but it still happened 2 times out of 4 or so. So not really bad.

The person who sent me the invite said they were talking about me over vent because of how well I played my class. They also said that I was the best they have seen.

I gave the credit to this board for helping me really unlock my potential and learning how to play right. I personally lik ethe extra trapping ability, but it if isn't for you thats cool. As long as you play well you will still be noticed. =D

Should be fine. I've been able to trap without any issues in regular runs. Like others have said it takes more planning though.

Ask your tank to give you about 15-20 seconds after you drop the trap before he pulls. This will burn off your cooldown time so you'll be ready to drop another trap soon. Also drop the trap right when the cooldown is up. One thing I've noticed with some hunters while I'm tanking is they wait until the trap breaks before they drop another trap. I usually will run to the other side and drop a trap again right away. Then when it does break and if resisted you'll be closer to the end of the trap cooldown.

If you're not ready to drop another trap and the trap break then Conc. shot the mob to slow it down when it comes at you again. Then by the time he does get over on you it'll be when the trap is ready.
