I would say that best race to play the Mage would be the Blood Elves becuase of their Mana Tap and Arcane Torrent racial abilites. ALso, they have the highest unbuffed intellect in the game. First runer up would be the gnomes, because of their own high intellect.

There is no 'best race', only your opinion. I'm tired of these threads. Actually try looking for threads that have the answer to your question.
"Highest unbuffed intellect" may be true, but the advantage over other unbuffed non-BE/gnome mages is NEGLIGIBLE, at most its a bonus of 2-3 int, wich is ABSOLUTELY NOTHING at endgame, hell, I dont think that is worth anything past lvl 10.
And yes there are already TOO MANY threads about the same old story, so dont make a new one.

Like the posters before me stated, race really doesn't matter. Whatever race you can stand looking at is the race you should pick. As for BE's, Arcane Torrent is essentially useless, because you should rarely be in range to use it. If you plan on PvPing, gnome's Escape Artist ability is great. But other than that, it's really whatever you want to play.
Personally, I chose a human because I like the looks and the rep gain is awesome in the later levels.

although minus hunters + rogues/druids with sprint up we can win most foot races (Assuming no/equal foot enchants/meta gem). :D

If you put a critter on our feet hitting us during all the race we can have some Blazing Speed's procs as well.

Personally, I prefer the gnome mage. My mage is a BGs pvper at 29. Escape artist is a great talent for pvp. Plus, I think the little tiny gnome with the huge damage output is funny (and funny looking).
For you football fans out there, my gnome reminds me of Wes Welker. Little tiny guy and you can't quite get a good hit on because he's squirmy and bouncing all over the place.
