is Slow worth it?Follow

#1 Dec 16 2007 at 4:52 AM Rating: Decent
I'm thinking about speccing my 70 mage with 41/20/0, putting a point in the Slow ability. My question is, is it worth it? I was just at the formal WoW forums and other mages have been saying that Slow is mana-inefficient and too easily dispellable. What is it useful for and is it worth that one point?

I Like it. I actually use it alot in battlegrounds and pve kiting, however I dunno how good it is in Arena's yet.

I think that the other 21 point skills are more worth it (blastwave + iceblock... soon to be coldsnap I believe)

From a Warlock's perspective, yes, it is worth it. After a mage casts Slow on me, I already know I'm going to die.

Shamans too. For resto, it's like Curse of Tongues pretty much, and we can't get away to boot. For enhance, we can't get to you to melee you anyways, but this just adds insult to injury. For elemental, slower cast times = death for me and life for you.

I might've missed something, why is it that slow kills locks?

Was a bit curious about this myself. Does it affect Drain Life, is that why?

they cant move to get away, their cast times are increased.

Also if you have slow, you have Imp CS. wich silences them for 4 seconds and keeps them from casting shadow (ZOMG not many lock spells that arent shadow!) for 8 sec.

Edit: And if they do cast fire, well low and behold, it takes 2x as long.

Also, to whoever says its mana intensive: Cost the same as blink. but you dont have to blink cuz THEY ARE SLOWED HAHAHA. Also with a 10k + mana pool, what does ~650 mana get you? Answer: 15 seconds of pure pew pew, while everything your enemy does it at HALF speed. That means that warrior is only gonna swing on you 2x tops before he dies, IF your inane enough to stand within his reach. That hunter isnt gonna autoshot you 900 times in 10 seconds either.

Again, it really matters about playstyle, Ice is King over all, especially if you have or are still developing your skill.

Not to mention you get a 50% bonus to ALL spells crit, and 25% of your intellect as spell dmg, and 15% bonus on your int, 30% mana regen while casting, huge threat reduction, etc etc etc.

Oh and You still Pop off 5k instant pyros =o.

Now your spell dmg needs to be around 1k to see the full power of the build too, wich sadly i have not attained, yet.

I heard somewhere that Slow doesn't affect melee and ranged attacks. It's only movement speed and casting speed...?

It works quite well on chasing druids who just shift out of all movement impairing effects. Cast slow on them, they shift out of it and back into travel form, cast slow again.

Slow = 50% movement, ranged and casting speed reduction. It doesnt slow melee attacks, but it does slow their movement.

Edit: IE 1 or 2 times during a fight, should a warrior actually get close enough to melee. Of course its a fine 8 yard line you have to walk.

read the tooltip.

Slow rocks. I love it in PvP. It's like an instant cast frostbolt + curse of tongues in 1 spell.

Out of PvP I never used it. I'd slow the odd mob here or there, but honestly, as a mage I burst down my target much more often than I kite it. It does make kiting easy enough that a 2 year old can do it.

Fear takes awhile to cast, which means it's most likely going to get counterspelled. Which leads to confusion for a second, then spamming weak fire spells which won't do anything against fire ward.

Yeah, we fail.

But fear is easily CS'ed without slow, so really, I don't see the great benefit against locks since their instant dots remain instant.

If they are not affliction locks, then they only have 2 instant dots (affliction has 4), so it doesn't save you there. It just gives you a little more time. I am *not* saying that slow rocks locks, I AM saying that slow rocks healers. ;-) Watch that flash of light take 3 seconds... holy light takes a half-hour, etc. I also use slow on melee classes that like to run up to me and kill me. It is *amazing* in WSG to put on a flag carrier (like exhaustion, but undispellable by a mage).

Can't you just dispell it with the felhunter?

Anyway, in arenas, I haven't tried it myself, but if they're as on the ball as they are on iceblocks, it's a waste of time, mana, and especially talents.
Not to mention there are 2 classes that will be dispelling this, that are basically focused on dispelling, rather than just one.

I wonder though, does blessing of freedom remove it?
