Recently my girlfriend started playing WoW after I had been sucked into it and her brother asked that she play so we could all party. So I re-rolled, she made her first character and he stayed as he was. There were two problems, first: it was a PvP realm. I had played on PvE before and generally didn't like the thought of PvP at all, but meh, it's worth it so I can play with her rather than alone.

Second: Her brother was level 40 while we were level 1.

Now being run through instances is fine, fast levels are good gear. However I enjoyed it more when I was grouping with random people for the Wailing Caverns, much more than standing back and throwing Rejuvenation on a tanking mage at the start of the fight. She felt the same, all we did was stand still while he fired off frostbolt and the mobs didn't even reach us.

So we went off and quested alone, which was great, up until level 25 or so. Right, time to move into contested territories. Yay -.- I'd already run through some to get FPs, ganked in Stonetalon Mountains just wandering about. I lost count of the amount of skeletons in Ashenvale and Tarren Mill really didn't sound like it'd be any better.

So, with questing leaving us incredibly vulnerable, grinding maybe a little less and being run through instances making the game a chore of just standing around, we quit that server and re-rolled onto a PvE.

I've played two Druids, one to 40 before I switched to played with my girlfriend, another to 27 on that server and I'm making another now, because I just love the class. She played a Paladin but didn't like it because her DPS sucked and tanking was boring.

So now she's a priest, wanting to do DPS but be able to heal at the same time. Now when we levelled together last time I had two sets of gear, one leather from going Feral (which I was specced in) mainly for kitty form, and one mix of cloth and leather for healing when I needed to. Both were pretty good sets, but not into the realm of +spell hit or +spell dmg at that point, just Int, Stam, Spirit, etc.

We easily soloed Tears of the Moon when we were both 26 with her tanking and me healing, even though neither of us were specced for that. We ended up with the level 30 target, and three 25s all at once because of their grouping. But no matter, I went down at 25% mana at the worst and she was only ever down to 50% health, god I love HoTs.

So now we've got new toons, level 1 all over, no help from anyone and I'm wondering on a spec for her. Shadow is obvious, since it's for DPS that she's playing but within that I've really no idea where to go. The ability to heal me rather than DPS should the quest/fight require it is something we're looking for too, preferably without speccing into it like when I was healing as Feral. How well do Shadow Priests heal outside instances on normal quests?

I played about with a talent calculator today, and here's what I got for a result at 70, though I've no idea what it'll be like. I know I missed Wand Specialization but she won't be doing any melee as soon as we hit 12 or so and I grab bear form.

She likes grinding a little when I'm not on, but when we're both there we'll always be questing together or something similar, so could someone please have a look at this build and tell me how it'd fare?

I'm aware she won't be able to use the Holy Tree benefits in Shadow Form, but they're mainly for healing. I was planning for her to take Improved Renew straight away so she can just throw it on while I'm in bear form then DPS. and after that head straight for Shadow Form at 43.

Advice, anyone? Sorry for the super long post and thanks in advance for replies.

So here's IMO the BEST leveling spec pre-40.

10-14: 5/5 Wand Specialization - get a good wand, search the AH for the lesser and then greater magic wands, and try to upgrade it every 4-5 levels.

15-19 5/5 Spirit Tap - get it, stack spirit gear as much as possible, but make sure to maintain enough stamina and intellect so you don't run out of mana or die too quickly

20-21 2/2 Imp. Shadow Word: Pain - get this, pre-mind flay and even pre-Shadowform, the way that I leveled was cast, Mind Blast, then SW: Pain, then wand the mob to death. This gives you two free ticks of SD: Pain for no extra mana

22-24 3/5 Shadow Focus - slightly a "filler" talent until later on in the game, but does up your DPS and allow you to take on mobs 3-4 levels higher than you with relative ease

25 1/1 Mind Flay - at this point, MF does not deal that much damage, but still get it. I found myself still using the MB/SW:P, wand rotation most of the time, but I'd use MF a lot on runner mobs or times when I was in a group

26-29 4/5 Imp. MB - this ups your DPS incredibly if you're using MB every time it's off CD, but is slightly a filler talent until later on

30-32 3/5 Shadow Weaving - I find that a 60% chance of upping your damage was plenty while leveling, and didn't bother getting 5/5 till around level 55 I think. Some people say get Shadow Reach first, and either talent is a good choice

33-34 2/2 Shadow Reach - makes MF a lot more useful by allowing you to get ~ 2 full MF's in before the mob gets to you, as long as you are moving backwards during the Global CD of SD: P

35 Vampiric Embrace - get it, not only is it a stepping stone to Shadowform, but makes it so you basically never have to bandage/eat/heal. Just cast it on a mob every 3-4 fights and you'll be back at around full health.

36-37 Imp. VE - get this as well, just makes one of the best Shadow tree spells even better, especially in groups. (Later, when raiding, not as useful)

38-39 5/5 Shadow Weaving or 2/3 Focused Mind - your choice really, by this point it won't really make a difference

Level 40 (YAY!!!!) respec to http://www.wowhead.com/?talent=bZZxMhpMxR0t

I cannot stress enough how important it is to have the best wand possible pre-40. A good wand and with wand spec. can and WILL give you more DPS than the majority of your shadow spells. Also, if you wand once you've cast MB and SW:D, you'll be regenerating mana before the fight is even over, as well as getting spirit tap once the mobs is dead. If you stack tons of spirit, you will rarely have to drink, and once you get VE you barely ever have to stop killing things.

I know leveling as a SP is a bit difficult until you get shadowform, but just stick it out and you become one of the best classes to level with. Also, it's kind of a general rule that any class is difficult to level with until you have 15-20 points in a talent tree. Enjoy, and welcome to the wonderful world of Shadow Priests!

Before 40, since she won't have Shadowform, throwing heals on you is easy. Also, once she gets Shadowform, just using VE, you can heal through basically every group quest you'll encounter.

The build you linked would work just fine, but that's a level 70 build, so it's when you're leveling that build isn't relevant. Pre Outlands it really isn't necessary to have any points in the holy tree. Later on, into the 40+'s just make sure your GF keeps a bit of healing gear around.

At level 60, when you guys get to Outlands, have her spec something like http://www.wowhead.com/?talent=bZf0xZxGMtrtRhtEo

I used that to level 60-70, throwing more points into Shadow as I went, and I was able to heal even level 70 instances. At this point though, it's vital you keep a pretty decent healing set around, just so you have around 400ish bonus healing and maybe 50 mana per second.

But really, duoing with a healing class of any kind makes quest infinitely more easy, to the point where you guys shouldn't die as long as you're careful.

Personally, I wouldn't bother with the imp renew until she's done in the shadow tree. At the early levels, it's certainly not going to make or break her healing abilities. At the later levels, when renew starts ticking at about 200 it will be more beneficial imho. For now, try to get her to level 40 and shadow form as fast as possible.

She'll have Vampiric Embrace at 30, which DOES make a difference. It's kind of samll at first, maybe about +10 health per tick, but it will get better quickly. If you're tanking in bear form, you probably won't need more than that.

Have fun!

Drop imp fade. That one is a waste of points.

Personally I'd go less in the holy tree and more in the disc tree for things like imp fort and shield, inner focus and meditation.

I'd recomend something like this:
