I already know the answer to this, so I ask this question not wanting the answer but wanting it confirmed:
Is it a good idea for a healadin to be wearing non-plate (or mail if pre-40) gear, so long as the gear has better stats? i.e (at some random level) choosing cloth boots with +10 intellect over plate boots with +6 intellect and +6 stamina, assuming said paladin will have a tank during all of his levelling career?

If you're not going to be PvP'ing, it is perfectly acceptable for a healadin to heal in lower AC gear if the stats are better.

yep. if not pvping. i have a prot pally i run with and since prot pally sucks as dps when i'm already tanking on my prot pally guess who gets to heal. he's come to like his cloth gear i make all healers need on healing gear when runing instance with me. true some peeps ***** and moan about plate or mail needing cloth or leather. but when peeps aint speced for it and healing and really have crap healing gear i feel they should get it since no one else in group needs it.

one time in mara had a hunter say you must not know pally when i told the pally to take a piece of cloth gear. he almost got booted but i didnt feel like hearthing for use staff at portal again for a 5th and didnt wanna 4 man the rest of it.

So now my story...
My friend and I are levelling as prot warrior and holy pally, doing only instances (its easy "LF3M need DPS"), I'm the warrior he's the pally. I see him typing to someone, which is wierd cuz I'm not seeing anything in guild or party chat and he doesnt have any friends on this server (as his main is on another). So I ask him whats up and he says someone is dissing on his gear, because he's got some cloth. So I whisper the guy (a paladin, no less) who says something like "Paladins are tanks, if you want to heal just roll a priest." Only he said it in a retarded jumble of words that makes me think that's what he meant. Yeah just needed to vent lol.

That honestly makes no sense since in nearly every raid I have been in for the last year, paladins have blown away priests in the healing charts. That should almost be turned around saying "lawl holy priest? if you wanted to heal, roll a paladin!"

Anyway, it is perfectly fine that you want to wear lesser armor values. Heck I wore leather boots until I was in SSC. If it has the correct stats, armor value really doesn't make much difference. One thing you need to watch out for though, spirit is a completely useless stat to healadins, and cloth/leather frequently stacks up on spirit, so you really have to be picky as to which pieces you use. Get stuff with Stam, Int, mp5, heal. You really are hard-pressed to find crit on that kind of gear, but you're not planning on using it for the rest of your healing career anyway. Get to 70 any way you can with whatever gear you can, then go down my sticky and start collecting that gear, then you'll be set to start hitting up the heroics and raiding.

Well on his main my friend joined a guild going into kara and was the best healer there BEFORE he regeared...he knows the paladin class fairly well. Not AS well as some of you guys, but better than I do and I know it pretty well.

Who says I know it well? :) I just spend all my time laughing at ret and trying to convince wayward prot paladins to see the light, that's all.

That's why I said "some" of you guys...

(Btw my pally will probably be both ret and prot until the next expansion comes out, but not holy - ret til 40, prot til 70, ret to quest, then prot to farm...since my focus is levelling alts instead of hitting end game).

First step in taking Warriors out of the solo-Main-raid-tank-spotlight and putting them in as Main healers with a Paladin at the helm as tank! Yes, yes I have seen the Light ^^
