+ intelect vs. mana regenFollow

I am a healadin. I recently got a pair of boots that were a straight +42 intelect from a drop, The boots I was wearing are only +18 intelect, but have +20 stamina and 6 mp5. My question is this; is it generally better to have more mana or to have quicker mana recovery. It seems to me like there is more large + intelect gear available, than there is mp5 stuff, so I started wondering if it is possible to increase you mana level high enough to make mana recovery a non issue in all or most cases? Is the end all be all name of the game +healing and mp5, or are there options? Any thoughts?

Just my recommendation:

+42 Int for instances (extra 360 mana over other piece + increase in heal crit)

+18 Int/+20 Sat/6 MP5 for solo.

Reason - The 6 MP5 will generate 360 mana in 5 minutes. If your fight lasts more than 5 minutes, then you are probably going to really really need the extra 200 health. :)

Just my opinion.

Keep both pieces of gear, and use accordingly.

EDIT - the "be all end all" is +heal. Load up on that when you find it. Even if it is cloth :)

There are several important stats for a healadin (check the sticky FAQ by CapJack).

Which is better depends on what other gear you have. If you already have plenty of mp5 and need spell crit, +42 int is better. If you already have 20% holy crit, but have little mp5, the 6 mp5 is better. If you only have 5k hit points, the stamina will help. So it really depends on what your other stats are. Also, is your goal to heal instances, where fights are relatively short, or raids, where fights can take 5+ mins?

*edit - spelling

I am not sure you got the point of what I am asking. I know all about balancing my stats with +int, + healing, mp5. I was kind of thinking outside the box, and wondering "What if". Is it possible using only +int gear to boost you mana level so high that you never or almost never run out. I have never tried to just max out my +int, and those boots got me wondering if it were possible.

If you raised your +int high enough would it even matter if you didn't have +healing or mp5. Since in doing so you would raise you %crit in the process would you miss the +healing, if you had 20000 mana would you run out if you were healing a group of well set up players? Its really just curiosity.

I might have to experiment and let you know the results

In theory, you would need no mp5 or +healing if you had no limit on how much int you could have. Holy guidance gives you +healing based on your int score and Illumination gives you mana back for each crit heal. If you could get tons of int, you could forgo mp5 and +healing. Too bad we can't get enough int for that to happen.

If you had 20,000 mana, you would be all set for a 5 man instance. In a 10 min raid battle with 150 mp5, 150 mana * 12 times per min * 10 mins = 18,000 mana regenerated. So it depends on the duration of the fight.

It'd be interesting to find out the maximum amount of int you could stack with gear. Has anyone ever broken 600?

Well hey, if I had enough str I could one-shot Illidan.

But since there is a limit to how much int you can have, it's better just to get an equal supply of everything to pick up that slack.

Can you do it - yes. But I would not recommend it, and it will not replace +heal.

If you max out int, and have barely any +heal, then you will be an inefficient healer for a longer period of time (and maybe you won't get that life-saving heal done in time). OK for general purposes, but not good in emergency situations.

I would not count on crits since they are chance. +Heal will always help, and is consitent. Thus, +Heal will be more reliable and effective. +Heal gear generally comes with +int, so you get the benefit of both (even though it is a bit less than +int gear).

Per my previous post - do the math to figure out if it is better than the MP5 value on pieces you find. However, it is all preference as to what you are trying to accomplish. You can think "ouside the box" all you want, but different situations have different requirements. You can't have the one magic setup that fits all applications.

If you prefer to dish out smaller heals, then go for the +int. As with everything, you need to find a balance. We can not tell you what will work best for you.

EDIT - I would be interested to hear your results if you do try it though. :)

Let me translate what the OP is really asking. "Hey guys I just got a green of the ____ and I was wondering if I should use that or something else."

Never have greens of pure int, or pure heal. There is absolutely no reason to gimp yourself like that by focusing on one single stat. If you're looking for which greens to need on or buy off the AH, you're going to want to go with either the "of the elder" (stam/int/mp5) or "of the physician" (stam/int/heal). You could manage to have a piece or two with "of the invoker" (int/damage/crit) but since its damage not heal, you're really not getting the stats you really want. Do not use a green with any other suffix than the ones I just listed. Trust me, if you do, you'll gimp yourself way too much.

EDIT: Do you guys think I should add this to my sticky?

I guess it depends on how pre-kara you want to go. I always took pre-kara to mean immediately before getting into kara, so greens would be pre-pre-kara.

But on the other hand it's like one paragraph so it couldn't hurt, just preface it with "A note on greens" or something like that.
