I'm a warrior myself, but I have a friend who is a lvl70 mage and I want to make him ready so he can do heroics and raids with me. I have a few questions regarding this.

1. What stats should he have for heroics+raids? (int, +damage, hit, crit)

2. He's doing a lot of pvp for the new arena items. Should he just keep doing that or are there drops that are better?

3. Staff or main hand/off-hand?

4. Should he go for crafted epics (spellfire etc.), pvp items or drops?

5. Are there any recommended drops in normal lvl70 instances he should go for?

Thanks for your time :)

1) Make sure he has around 75+ hit (for heroics/instances) and try to get closer to 164 for raids (hit capped) (the more the better to be able to raid later on). +dmg will probably start out around 500-600 I am guessing, try to get that as high as possible, I know it can be difficult without raiding. Crit, it depends on the spec (fire or frost, normally) frost you can generally expect around a 18-20% chance after being a bit geared, fire is generally around 30%. The PvP gear isn't too bad for PvE but the heroic badge loot is generally better (some onpar with T-5 items).

2) If he wants to do a lot of PvP to be competitive in Arenas then I say go all out with that, the PvP gear is a decent stepping stone into raiding, although each normally use a different gemming.

3) For PvP I generally recommend a staff because it more often than not offers more stam+int for a loss in dmg. If this is for PvE then a main/offhand is generallly preferred for the increase in damage. (I'm partial to the new heroic badge offhand myself)

4)If he plans to do PvE seriously or raid then I would HIGHLY recommend doing tailoring to make the epics. They are some of the best that a mage can get until mid-tier5 raids (I just started replacing a couple pieces of mine while I am 4/6 SSC 2/4 TK). If he can get either battlecast (for PvP) or Spellstrike (for PvE) those are excellent pieces as well.

5) Before he can get into heroics (which most 70s should now be able to do because of the honored nerf) he can check out this site to see if any of these are upgrades for him http://www.wow-loot.com/mage.htm

One thing to always remember is that Hit > Damage. If you miss thats 0.

Anobix hit it on the head with the stats, 75 - 100 hit, 20% crit (frost), 650 - 700 spl damage.

Don't know anything about PvP or PvP gear, I do know that the tailoring sets are an amazing jump start to good gear.

The silk honor gear is excellent for pve if you gem/enchant it for pve.
The s1 arena gear (besides the weapon) isn't really worth it as much though.
But s3's better then most kara epics.
