Lvling a brand new mage; how does this sound?Follow

So, I'm finally starting a mage on Dentarg, seeing a couple of my RL friends are currently playing there. As Dentarg is a PvP server, I need some burst damage, and as I hate the frost spec to lvl with (boring as hell...) its gonna be arc/fire. I decided on a 40/21/0 spec, since I've never played a PoM-Pyro mage before, and I decided to give it a shot :)

A few things you should know; lvling speed is not the biggest concern; not making a fool out of myself while my friends are around is :) So I'm focussing on low lvl (20-40) PvP. I will recheck my spec after that. So, my build;

up to 19:

I'm a huge fan of Imp. Arcana Missle... shoot me :P Easy factor vs lower lvl rogues and warriors (and hunters if I out lvl/gear them).

up to 30:

I got what I absolutely needed from Arc (Clearcasting) so off to the Fire tree to get Pyro! As for Impact rather then Imp. Fireball; I'll be going full Scorch, with Arcana Missle/Fire Blast when clearcasting procs.

up to 40:

Now I truelly got all I want from Fire, so I'm free to spend the rest of my points till 70 into Arc. After 40 I'll be teaming up with a shadow priest, so things will go faster after that (with the Q xp changes in 2.3). Hell, maybe I'll even try an AoE spec.

Things I would like to know from you; Am I missing something vital to PvP survivability? Is Scorch > AM a viable attack sequence? And maybe some tips for my 10 > 40 period :)

Thanks in advance :D

I wouldnt' waste the points with clearcasting, it is more of a raid talent imo than a leveling one, especially at low levels.

It really is up to you if you want to do arcane missiles (although their mana efficiency is in the crapper... which with the 10% chance to proc clearcasting you would be out of mana more times than not with it anyway).

You also did not take improved fireball for the faster casting speed, I would definitely take that as my first talent(s).

Last you say you may do a AoE build... I am hoping you mean a frost one because fire/arcane ones are pretty iffy.

Another thing of note:

19 bracket is not for mages, we get destroyed there by the hunters+rogues.

29 is possible because we finally have blink, although I would choose to go frost > fire for pvp because of the snaring ability for many classes that and you will be doing a good amount of WSG where snaring the flag carrier is essential.

I don't understand how frost is 'boring'. I'd be a whole lot more bored drinking every pull as you use 2/3 of your mana bar spamming AM...

Thanks for the replies, just a quick note to both of you;

@ Mikelolol; I've played a frost mage for 30 lvls, and seeing it is a 2 button class, I hated it. Frost Bolt > Frost Bolt > Frost Bolt > Frost Nova > *get some distance* > repeat. I don't know how it is past lvl 32, but I would prefer drinking every 3th mob and having to use all my spells over casting 2 spells and last 2 times longer. Like I said in the comment, its not about speed.

@Anobix; really constructive post, thanks, but let me quote what I said before;

So no, I won't be spamming AM, just when Clearcast procs. I also need it for that nifty crit talents later on, which is why I chose it :)

I am just using Fire ball till I get Scorch, and by that time I will also get Pyro blast, which would make my attack sequence Pyroblast > Scorch > Scorch > Scorch > Scorch etc till Clearcasting procs and I can cast AM for 0 mana cost.

I hope that clears things up a littel, although I am still wondering about the questions I asked earlier;

Sorry, I entirely missed that point of yours. The crit talent later on is a relatively small chance to crit (around 3%) which is handy for long boss fights where you will probably clearcast quite a bit or at least a handful of times and potentially crit one of them, but for PvP I don't see it as viable of an option.

As to your last question it is a possible way to do it, but I would still recommend using frost for frostbolts + cone of cold + frost nova and shatter talents make a deadly combo -- one of my favorite moves is to drop down in the middle of a group of allies in WSG, frost nova then cone of cold + AE and see all the pretty crits.

Back before TBC and the AoE damage caps, the best ever was a hybrid 0/30/21 build using Frost Nova, blastwave, CoC, and AE in the middle of a group of hordies who have single pulled Vann and are all clustered right in there.

My god, doing that once or twice in a BG assured you top on damage. It was nice. Smiley: nod

Lol! Yeah, but I did that to the alliance when I'd recall back to the base. ;-)
