My guild is slowly and let me emphasize slowly getting attuned for kara but since most of us are just casual weekend players it's extremely slow going. So I know that in 2.3 they gave us a new raid that didn't require attunment, but was from what I hear fairly brutal.

So my question is, gear. Should I be looking more at the gear list for kara as far as tanking items go? I'm geared decently but by no means ready to tank anything but maybe a few heroics. So I would love to hear from anyone that has run ZA frequently and could give me a little info on it.

ZA picks up where prince leaves off. So if you don't have prince on farm, you're going to really struggle to clear ZA.

ouch...thx for the info though, guess it's back to waiting for people to get attuned and maybe doing some easy UBRS runs in the meantime, thx again for saving me and my guildies quite a large repair bill.

Kara is basically designed to be a training ground.

Each encounter will test one aspect of the raid. Attumen can you split a mob and focus fire, moroes can you handle CC and heal through a DOT. Maiden are heals strong enough to keep melee dps alive and tank as well, do they know how to use cleanse. Curator do you have dps that can focus fire. Aran for interrupts and handling adds and random aggro.

All stuff you run into later on. The difference is that once you get past Gruuls you have 25 man and you will find multiple obstacles. DPS will have 4+ things to worry about, healers 10, tanks will be all over the place. The days when you only had 1-2 things going on during an encounter in Karazhan will seem like fond memories.

Lots of guilds who even had Kara on farm got pwned when they figured ZA would be easy farming, cause it is much the same as any t5 instance only with 10 players.

Malacrass without a completely decked out party is nigh impossible. Bear without 2 well-geared tanks and 3 well-geared healers is completely impossible. Dragonhawk without calm, collected co-ordination is a wipe-fest.

T4 level gear will get you through the first little bit of the instance with a head ache. T5 will see you through till the end, but it will still be tough.

One way to look at it is ZA is the heroic version of Kara.

The core group of my guilds kara raiders down everything in kara except prince and the dragons in 2 nights, about 6 - 8 hours.
We took a stab at ZA after we had each gotten about 2 kara drops. We got to the bear boss after about 1 hour instead of the 20 minutes for the timed loot bonus, and gave up after wipeing WAY too many times.
Worth going to look at the art and see the trash though. Do not expect to get too far unless you have geared up through Kara or heroic mark turn ins or PVP rewards though.
