+Int or +Damage?Follow

#1 Dec 12 2007 at 9:30 PM Rating: Decent
I am leveling a mage currently at 61 named Flatunello on Kargath. As a Lock I went for +Sta and +Damage. But Stamina seems less important to a mage since he can't convert it to mana. What is the breakeven point between selcting a high +Int item versus +Damage when that choice is possible?

I ran across an item in the AH that had +25 Int on it but no +Damage. I was wearing a +12 Int piece with +20 Damage. (All these numbers are from memory so don't quote me.) +Int means more spells cast = more damage. Of course, +Damage means less mana required.

Where is the point at which I pick +Int over +Damage? I am not sure how to do the calculation which is why I ask.

Thanks!

At your level, you simply want both. There's no real calculation, tbh. Just get the most damaging gear(include +crit and +hit in your comparisons) you can get that also has Int and some stam on it.

Thanks. Yeah forgot about +Hit and +Crit. I find that I am being resisted a lot more than I was on my Lock at that level.

How accurate is the Armory for their upgrade rankings?

as long as you don't run out of mana in a standard fight, go for spelldamage, hit, crit. if you do outdoor quests, you can drink very often (and your own free water), so +dmg will make your questing faster. if you find that in instances you go oom on boss fights (even with mana gems and evocation), you need more int.

kinda depends on how deep you go into Arcane too, As a percentage of your int can become spell dmg.

I personally have been trying to keep about 10k mana, unbuffed, if an item keeps the mana and improves crit, dmg and or stam, I grab it up.

I prefer spell damage over intellect. I'm not saying intellect is not important; it is, but when you consider the frost tree is much more efficient mana wise than the other two for DPS, and that it doesn't get as much overall damage, I need to boost it as much as I can.

I would just go +spell damage myself, you're at 61, you're going to want to be able to kill mobs faster than to worry about your mana pool, which will only factor in when you instance, and even then, assuming you're grouping with understanding people, you'll have plenty of opportunity to regain mana in an instance. Also, don't forget that in the next patch, the mana gems are getting a nice overhaul; more mana restored and three uses per gem (even though I think this might be restricted to the Mana Emerald and the Mana Ruby).

If going +spell damage becames a big issue and you find yourself OOM way too much, then try going +int.

Probably never. You have to keep in mind that when you do begin raiding, you are going to have to have a decent +spell damage to effectively contribute to your group. The first round of Kara (Attunmen) a mage is there strictly for DPS support. You will want +spell damage.

Also for raiding, you will need +spell hit. This is critical in a boss fight. All the spell damage in the universe won't do a bit of good when RESIST keeps scrolling up.
