SoR or SoCFollow

#1 Dec 11 2007 at 11:28 PM Rating: Default
So im Lvl 33 and when grinding or so ..(im prot spec.) i usually start SoC with Judgement, then use SoR until Judgement cd is done then release then conti. doing that until the mob(s) is dead.and when i get Reckoning i do SoC to get more faster swings. i just wanna know if there is any better way to get good dps and save mana instead of my way of grinding . Ive heard from some Rets that they just use SoCommand to release a judgement. So yeh please help thx.

Also can someone tell me how to tank .. i keep enough aggro but i feel thats my tanking is not good enough. thx

SoC = Seal of Command
SoCr/SotC = Seal of the Crusader

Had a hard time trying to figure out your post because you only use the abbreviation.

If you're grinding with a two-hander, I'd suggest judging Seal of the Crusader and then switching to Seal of Command. If you're using a one-hander and shield I'd suggest judging Seal of the Crusader and then using Seal of Righteousness.

To keep your mana afloat, don't spam-judge your seals. Let them run their course and only judge SoC or SoR when they're about to end. I suggest timing a Hammer of Justice so that you can judge your SoC while your target is stunned. A bit of extra damage there.

If you do run low on mana there's always Blessing of Wisdom coupled with a judged Seal of Wisdom. Seal of Wisdom plus Reckoning makes for pretty nice mana regen.

Note that my Paladin is level 60 and I haven't been playing him actively for over a year or so. All my knowledge is based on how Paladins were pre-TBC, but I figure most of the rules still apply.

The basic routine I got into while grinding at the lower levels is

1. Cast Seal of the Crusader (SotC)
2. Approach the mob.
3. Cast Judgement
4. Cast Seal of Righteousness (SoR)
5. Cast Judgement (when SoR is fading- you see the buff icon blinking, right?)
6. Repeat steps 4 and 5 until the mob is dead.
7. Repeat step 1.

**Ret pallies will use Seal of Command (SoC) in lieu of SOR. In most circumstances you don't want to attack with SotC -- the faster swings will not increase your damage as much as SoR or SoC will.

If you have enough mana, work in some Hammer of Justice and Consecration early on in the fight, especially if you're fighting more than one mob at a time.

There are a few commonalities for any pally tanking, regardless of spec. Ensure that you have Righteous Fury cast on you at all times. Use Retribution Aura at all times. When you're in range of your targets, keep casting Consecration -- I usually did it immediately after judging SotC on the first mob. Use Righteous Defense to pull mobs back to you if necessary. You don't have to worry about being your group's damage dealer in most cases; as long as you're keeping the mobs from aggro'ing your healers/DPS, you've got most of the job covered.

Dazen, I used to use the same process when grinding as you did (less the Reckoning since I'm Holy spec). Starting a Seal costs a ton of mana. Judging is pretty cheap. Keep that in mind. If you want to conserve mana, you have a few options (including ones that Mazra mentioned):

1) Get Benediction from Ret tree (reduces cost of Seals and Judgements 15%)
2) Use Blessing of Wisdom
3) Use Seal/Judgement of Wisdom if you need more mana (I rarely use this when grinding solo)
4) Don't judge as much. Each time you judge, you have to restart Seal. That means you are spending mucho mana (since starting a Seal is mucho mana). It may take 1 or 2 extra hits to kill, but you conserve that much more mana.
5) Use bandages between fights instead of spells to heal (Don't know why it took me a while to figure this one out. I think I was just too engrossed in using healing spells).
6) Try not to switch Seals often. Switching Seals costs a lot of mana.
7) Don't use Consecration unless you have many mobs on you. I don't know if you do, but have seen many Pallys spam it when fighting 1 or 2 mobs. Waste of mana.

As for tanking - check the FAQ for good tips.

Hope that helps.

I have to agree with what everyone else has already said. But I will add one thing that I noticed as I leveled. Occassionaly I came across some 2-H weapons with unusually fast attack speeds. I'm not sure at what level I first started seeing these since the only one I can think of right now is the Heart Fire Warhammer from Ramparts.

Judging Seal of Crusader and using Seal of Righteousness seemed to be far more effective with fast weapons then sticking with my Seal of Command combo. Faster weapons just don't seem to get the full benefit of Seal of Command. I'm not a very good number-cruncher but I believe it has to do with the number of procs per minute with Command.

So keep an eye on the speed of the weapon you are using.

Reckoning works way better with SoR than SotC. You'll (usually) get all four hits in anyway, and since SoR activates per hit and you're hitting twice each swing, you'll essentially be doubling its damage. Increasing your speed will make sure you get that fourth swing in, but overall (this is what I've observed) you would have been better off keeping SoR on.

For example, say I usually hit a mob for around a hundred damage and SoR adds 29 to that. That's increased to 58-ish extra damage each hit, and with Reckoning that's doubled, working out to 300 total. If I'd used SotC, my damage would actually be less (80) and I'd get no holy bonus. I'd hit eight times optimally with Reckoning on and certainly make it before it wore off, but I'd only deal 640 damage, compared to about 900 if I'd used SoR - and that's if I missed the last Reckoning swing.

I have the same routine the above posters described, using the SotC judgment to boost SoR damage. It works well and I'd only use another judgment if I was low on something like health or mana.

I know a lot of people say when using SoR to let it run its course before judging it. Though it depends on what talents and gear you have, I say experiment with the mob you are on and determine what is most effective as each mob is different.

For my situation, first I will say I don't have Reckoning yet but I do see a potential benefit to it....will have to see though. In the mean time here is what I have done.

I am a lot like you in that I am working on a protect build.
I have quite a bit of spirit through my gear and I regularly have blessing of wisdom on which makes my mana refresh quite high.

Having 5/5 in benediction is a huge help in saving MP. I also have 5/5 in intellect but really that is only of use in multi mob fights. Also 2/2 in Improved Judgement to provide quicker judgements.

When playing solo I always lead in with SoCr and judge it.

For the experiment part, test to see how many SoR judgements you can get off on a mob. If you are barely getting 2 off, or your 2nd judgement is with a sliver of health left, just judge SoR near the end. This is especially useful on mobs that run away. Judging SoR is extremely useful for that situation. You don't want the mob running while you are waiting for Judgement to refresh.

NOTE: A key to recasting SoR after judging it is to do it immediate after a swing so that you can recast SoR before your next swing. In my case, Judging SoR gets me close to 200 holy damage and a swing gets me about 60. If I don't recast my SoR before the next swing, I lose the Holy damage on that one effectively making my judgement only worth about 140.

As my note above aludes to, when grinding it is all about efficiency.

Personally with my setup, if I am judging mobs three times in a fight (1x SoCr and 2xSoR), I can usually get through about 10 before I have to do any sort of resting. And that is only if I am going non stop with little to no delay between mobs. Usually the travel time between mobs is enough to get my many up again. If you notice your mana getting low, reduce the number of judgements you are doing for a couple fights and your mana should recover.

Don't most people say SoCom and SoC instead of SoC and SotC
#9 Dec 12 2007 at 11:42 AM Rating: Good
I say SoC for Seal of Command, SotC for Seal of the Crusader, it keeps it simple, just use the first letter in every word.

It looks like we need to organize a panel and get the official abbreviations figured out for good XD

SoR is better with a fast weapon because of its multiple hits. Combine that with frequent Judgments and you've got a hefty amount of DPS.

My Retridin uses a slow 2H weapon, and I find SoC works much, much more effectively simply because of the sheer damage, especially if it crits.

This is what I do:

1. Cast SotC (Seal of the Crusader).
2. Aggro the target by Judging SotC.
3. Attack!
4. Cast SoC (Seal of Command).
5. Continue to attack, Judging SoC when SoC is about to run out. Cast SoC immediately after Judging it.
6. The target dies.

A less mana-efficient but more damaging alternative would be:

1. Cast SotC (Seal of the Crusader).
2. Aggro the target by Judging SotC.
3. Attack!
4. Cast SoC (Seal of Command).
5. Continue to attack, Judging SoC whenever Judgment recharges (if you have 'em, throw in Hammer of Justice and Crusader Strike for extra damage). Cast SoC immediately after Judging it.
6. The target dies.

When I used SotC and SoR together, I did this:

1. Cast SotC (Seal of the Crusader).
2. Aggro the target by Judging SotC.
3. Attack!
4. Cast SoR (Seal of Righteousness).
5. Continue to attack, Judging SoR whenever Judgment recharges (if you have 'em, throw in Hammer of Justice and Crusader Strike for extra damage). Cast SoR immediately after Judging it.
6. The target dies.
