I recently trained a new wolf pet on my Lvl 52 hunter. This level 51 wolf is one of the black ones from Jintha'Alor and came with Bite and Dash. Of course he is brand new to me and currently has negative training points.

Here is my question: I'm ready to start going into ST and would like to take this wolf along. However I am unable to teach him Furious Howl until I get him some points. Would it be impolite to a PUG to take along a pet who isn't fully trained just to let him soak up some experience? My other option is to take along my trusty tank crab.

I feel bad not bringing my absolute "A" game to any instance group. The crab is fully trained and is always a useful OT for clothie protection. I doubt the wolf will hinder the group...but some people may be disappointed b/c he has no FH.

it would be BEST to comne to any instance with your A game, but your pets performance (outside of how well you control him) is not going to make or break your group. Instancing levels them pretty fast (relatively anyway, since you're not looking at the clock all the time while instancing but you are while you're grinding) and if you have the skills already learned, just teach them to him once he gets enough points, it will probably be during the instance anyway.

Just do the instance, if you don't tell anyone they probably won't notice anyway.

Honestly in most non lvl 70-5 mans, (and even in some of those) Most group members could care less what kind of pet you have, or the abilities they have, mainly because they only care about you doing damage and not breaking CC. And also because they have their own thing worried about. Maybe its just me but never once have I went into a party with a crappy pet and been questioned, lol.

So ya, it should be fine, as long as you send him in to hit things, most people (shouldn't) care.

I just did a sucessful run on Mech last night with a pretty good group. I brought my brand new lvl 66 Wind serpent. Why?

Cause:

1.) I can use it to do burst damage on bosses while they are using AoE.

2.) More importantly, it needs to build its trust for me.

3.) I still maintained 2nd on the DPS meter and that was only second to a enhance shammy in mostly epics. Hard to compete with that and Trap at the same time. My suggestion is to you however. If you plan on bringing lower lvl mobs into instances to soak up exp. Spec away from BM if you are one ATM. That will cause a big change in your over all DPS.

All in all... remember even though DPS meters are the way people check your performance... it is not a complete measure of talent.

When I was leveling my ravager, I asked the group I was with if they all felt competent enough to run it with my low lvl pet. If I got a shaky response I'd grab my bear, if I knew them or see a couple of em etc, out came the ravager.

I just ask if its OK. So far, it has always been fine with my team mates. I suggest doing so on instance runs where the mobs are green or yellow to you and not orange or red.

I just had to quote this for emphasis.

The fact is, not only do parses not tell the whole story, but they can be manipulated as well. I was running with someone who kept throwing up a parse results. He was leading, but after a while I began to notice that he was using big hit abilities towards the end of a mobs life. By doing this he was gaining artificial damage. The effect of this is that it brought up his numbers while actually slowing us down as we often had to wait on him after fights...

Besides that, parses don't read what your doing while you're not DD'ing. They don't account for kiting, trapping, ect... They don't tell anyone that you weren't going all out and letting a tank build hate in the beginning of a fight.

They can be good to get the jist of what's going on but never literally trust them.

edit: sorry to go so off topic, but parses/dps meters are a pet peeve of mine.

It's not too bad if you bring in a pet that's a few levels below you. Your pet will have a hard time hitting the mob, but it shouldn't cripple your DPS. Also keep in mind, that if a group member freaks out about a low level pet, let them know that a pet's aggro radius is based on your level, not the pet's level. It won't pull monsters that you wouldn't pull with a level 70 pet.

I took a level 63 ravager into Kara, and it lowered my DPS a bit. It wasn't so much that I was doing poorly, but it was enough that I went from being 1-2 on the damage meter to being 3-4. What was even suckier, is that in the 4 hours that I had the pet in there with me, it didn't gain a bit of loyalty, and only a bar of experience >.< I'll be taking my cat until I can get the ravager up to at least 68 and full loyalty.

Thanks for the all the help folks. It sounds like it shouldn't be too much of a problem for me to take along my new wolf. He is only a level behind me so he isn't really a "low level" pet. And since I'm MM spec I don't rely on his dps that much. I think an instance run or two with him will help me raise his loyalty to the point where I can start skilling him up.

Thanks again for the help.
