Prot vs ShockadinFollow

Folks;

I was checking out the FAQ and reading up a bit on shockadins. My understanding of a shockadin would be a Pally that could heal as well as do some damage grinding/questing. I'm currently prot and have been for a good long time. At lvl 59, I'm able to take on 3 lvl 60 mobs at once with holy shield/BoSanc up. It takes forever to kill them, but I feel like a cockroach (it's very rare that I die). If I were to go with a shockadin build, would I then be limited to single pulls and basically out of luck if I get 2 in a pull? What kind of spell damage am I looking at before I can go shockadin?

It could be that I have unrealistic expectations on how fast things ought to die (my main is a mage), and maybe that is part of the 'it takes things forever to die' observation on my part.

I'm no expert, so I can't really answer. I just wanted to share some observations from my experience of briefly trying Shockadin at level 56/57 after being Prot since level 35. I didn't fully switch my gear out, so I suspect I didn't get the full effect. I can tell you for sure though, that you will have more trouble with multiple mobs, but still be able to handle one or two, and they should die faster. You'll burn through mana a lot faster too. That probably becomes less true with more relevant gear, so be prepared to really commit some time and money switching everything out.

I used to be prot, but now I'm a holy paladin with some +spell damage gear. I'm killing things faster than I was before. As prot, it takes forever for mobs to kill you and takes a long time for you to kill them. As a shockadin, I can kill a 3 mob pull within 3 consecrations at most. You just have to be smart about healing yourself early.

As has been said, Shockadin is very gear dependent. You want a few hundred + spelldamage and some mp5 gear and nice +INT gear so you have a bigger mana pool. Trying to do Shockadin without that kind of gear is not a good idea because you won't do enough damage, won't regen mana fast enough and won't have enough mana to begin with. I don't have problems with two mobs. Three mobs are more of an issue, but even there it's generally fine with healing while the last one is stunned. It's faster than Prot, but not as survivable if something goes wrong. But you're not limited to single mob pulls.

Well, I tried it for a while and it sucked. I ended up sucking my mana dry quickly and then putting SoW up with JoW and praying for mana to heal myself with. Went back to prot... go ahead, pick up 5-6 mobs and grind them all down in about 1.5 * the time to kill one of them. I guess that's what I'll be doing.

On a side note.... tanked my first BC instance last night... Ramparts. We destroyed stuff in there. Twas a beautiful thing, consecration, AS pulls, sheep were there, kitty dps, priest healer and the ole hunter + pet.

I actually tanked the demon boss and his adds using concecration, no need for an off tank for those guys. It was really fun.

I don't have the right gear at all for a shockadin build (and I'm not sure I would for a good long while). I'm certain that I'll just keep my holy set and my tanking set and spec holy at some point in time, because I like to heal as well.

Thanks for listening to the ramblings of a new pally.

It levels just as slow due to mana concerns and lacks the survivability. Also since shockadin tends to waiver from traditional healing builds and focus on +spell damage over +heal they tend to not be as efficient for healing instances if you choose to do ramparts etc.

Their dps is questionable as well and they offer no CC so once again finding groups will be painful.

No Solo bonus + actually detracting from group viability = fail.

Just go straight holy. Stack up on +healing gear, and you'll end up with pretty good +damage. If you put 40 points in holy, and then throw a few into protection (redoubt, ImpRF, toughness), you can even do some AOE grinding (albeit much less effectively than prot spec). As a level 70, I've ground zaxxis raiders for badges as well as the eals in the lake near shattrath (for motes of water). I can round up 7-8 at a time and then just consecrate (activate trinkets for added damage), and heal my way through. Once you're done just pick up all the loot and drink. It takes a little while, but it's easy and fun.

Prot is way more fun and also more survivable (nigh-unkillable, actually). AOE grinding four or five at once is a nice ego boost.

But, hey, if you're bored with prot, you're bored with prot. Try something different for a while and see if you like it. The shockadin sounds like a fun concept, and as long as you approach it as a hybrid build rather than a specialist (in the same way that paladins themselves are hybrids rather than specialists) I'm sure you can make it work in PvE. PvP is a different matter, but frankly, given a choice between Protection and Holy for PvP I'd pick Holy. The only advantage prot gives you is survivability, which ain't much in most battlegrounds or arena matches where the amount of damage or healing you can put out in 30 seconds is what determines a fight.

In the very few battlegrounds I've been in, I tanked any of the elites when possible (usually not possible), and other than that I throw on my healing gear and throw around Blessing of Light and then Flash of Light. ;-)
