I heard... I heard... someone told me that Shockadins have no place in today's PvP scene. Is this true? Being a shockadin is what I'm aspiring to, but am I wasting my time? Should I go Ret instead?

If by shockadin you mean healer that throws out the occasional holy shock, then sure you have a place. If you mean 100% dps spell caster in arena, then you will be nothing but free arena points. Ret is OK at best at PvP. Paladins don't really have a wtfpwn way of killing people the way some other classes do, its the nature of our class. We're much more defense than offense.

Well, its my understanding that no Paladin is 100% DPS spellcaster, and the idea behind the Shockadin is that they're a very capable healer as well as good spell damage dealers.

Are there any self-proclaimed Shockadins or former shockadins that might shed some light on this? I've tried looking this stuff up, but the only info I get is from several patches ago...

i dont quite think the moniker shockadin is accurate. however, you can get a set of spell dmg gear and put out some pretty mean dps as a holy paladin. ret probably does better dps, but its less controllable (more crit reliant) and your healing takes a dump.

ive got a holy pally friend who leveled 60-70 as holy, and he was consistently impressed with the dps output he could get once his spell dmg gear got going. with crits, he could easily top about 3000 damage in 3 seconds using a 2h. 2h crit, JoR crit, holy shock crit (and you can guarantee the shock crit thanks to divine favor).

Shockadins (that is, Paladins who have a lot of spelldamage (and to a lesser extent mp5 gear) and 40ish holy talents) are quite viable in PvP. In an arena, we heal mostly -- that makes sense in that very limited, constricted, and somewhat artificial context.

In a BG, we can heal and do our DPS thing as the situation warrants. I am a "survivadin" spec, and I get several killing blows (in one on one situations) and also good damage in group kills in each BG from (1) being able to outlast the other guy, (2) SoR, (3) the occasional Shock and JoR, and (4) being able to get out of a lot of CC, and to bubble and heal. It works well. Not nearly the same raw DPS as a ret pally, but I have better survivability and much larger mana pool so it works out pretty well .. and I also heal my team-mates. It's quite fun, and quite doable outside the arena.

Yeah, I agree, its a lot of fun. I'm stuck on whether or not I want to go 41/0/20 or 40/0/21. Thanks for everyone's comments and stuff. I just hit 70 and there's still a lot I need to learn. I know the "Shockadin" is sort of poorly defined, and not exactly a single type of build, but the concept is attractive is all.

The shockadin aspect of holy is the only reason i respecced from prot (that and my guild telling me to of course...). As has been said i think a shockadin is best at pvp when he focuses on healing and supports dps every now and then. JotC+Avenging Wrath+Divine Favour+Spelldam Trinkets+Holy Shock can deal some serious damage, but the downtime keeps such combos from become really game changing. But if you do stack enough spell crit judging righteousness can do some decent damage.

Like in that vid for instance. Really shows off shockadin's offensive abilities.

That depends on how much you will be running instances and/or raiding. I think Divine Illumination is very useful in boss fights. It *can* be useful in some PvP situations too, but for most PvP you're probably better off with 40 in holy and 21 elsewhere.
