Kings defender for a TankadinFollow

Well on my first run through Kara, King's defender dropped. As the main tank was already sporting it the guild let me have it, much to my delight. However, I have been using the Continuum blade up to this point, with a +40 spellpower enchant, and losing that 161 spell damage is a bit of a kick in the nuts.

My spelldamage dropped from over 200 to less than 50 as soon as I equipped it. The Kings defender has 2 less stamina, 13 defence, 40 extra dps, and 182 more armour (not really so much out of 12k). I slapped on a +40 spell enchant but it is still 121 less than the Continuum blade. The 13 defence is nice, but is it really worth so much?

My guild say I can make up the difference in spell damage with different gems and enchants, but it seems like I would be trying to fit my entire outfit around this sword to make up what it lacks, and all for only 13 defence, 182 armour and +40 white dps.

I will definitely hold onto the King's defender, for the harder, non aggro boss fights, but generally do you think it is worth equipping and building the rest of my gear around? My defence is sitting around the 500 mark with the continuum blade (enough for kara); it is avoidance I am missing and King's defender doesn't offer that.

Will it come into its own as I progress from Kara onto the harder raids?

No, let the rest of your gear be protection warrior and use a spell damage weapon with a spell damage enchant.

i second that. i dont think there is another single piece of gear where you can get that much spell damage on it like the weapons can have. at least not that i've seen and if it has it your droping your deff **** to make up for it. your better off with it on weapon.

Hmm..gonna clarify a few things...

Dont forget to add in your 10% more armor from your talent in the prot tree. :P..still not that big of a concern ..at all.

...Why?...so you can do less damage?.. Spell damage = more damage, even when not tanking. The only place I could see this usable is in the "library" in kara, where the little worms are only effected by melee, and no spells. This is more damage there, than your spell dmg weapon..but thats about the only situation I see fit.

Hmm..actually, yes it does :)...13 defense rating gives ~ 5.42 defense skill. ~ 5.42 defense skill gives ~ 0.22 chance for you to be missed, ~ 0.22 change to block, ~ 0.22 chance to parry, ~ 0.22 chance to dodge....Equaling ~ 0.66 complete avoidance, and ~0.88% chance more towards pushing crushing blow off the table (includes block %, where you still take damage)

No, at least, not until you have 500 spell damage in your gear without a spell dmg sword equipped :P...Or, you could possibly be at a gear point where it would push you over being able to not get crushing blow'd, which you'd still have problems with aggro, even using food, elixers and wizard oil.....Those are the only few cases where you should even think of wearing it as part of your raid tanking gear.

I'd like to reaffirm what everyone has suggested. I've seen the King's Defender in that box many times now, never felt the need to "sport" it. As a Paladin tank, maybe MAYBE 1/100th of your threat and dmg come from your Weapon dmg, it's just not the way we work. A spell dmg weapon is ALWAYS the better way to go. If you find yourself lacking avoidance, you always have the option of putting an agility +15 enchant on your weapon(if you look at my armory, I had to do this myself). 15 Agi will give you .6% Dodge. You can also enchant your gloves for +20 Agi for even more avoidance as well. An easy weapon to accomplish this with is the Gladiator's Gavel from Season 1 arena that is now available from Battleground rewards. 22,500 honor and 20 EotS token. I got this thing in 4 days of Battlegrounds in AV/EotS. Btw, you'd be surprised how many melee classes will let you tank them to death, it's really sad. =P

Here's a link to the weapon:

The Crystal Forged Sword, which you can buy from the AH, is always the best weapon to start out with for Kara though if PvP isn't your thing. If I hadn't gotten the Gavel, that weapon would have lasted me all the way through Kara.

GL sir!

I'll hold onto it for the fights that dont need as much aggro (Curator for example) because when I tank I don't worry about doing damage, I worry about staying alive and keeping the boss on me, and this sword should help keep me alive longer with its extra defence....

Your explanation of the avoidance it gives also swings it in my mind for some fights...

Ok. I'm only lvl 63. I haven't run Kara as my Pally (lvl 63) is my first toon.

But from everything I've read, you should have 200+ spell damage to tank as a prot pally. From the way you describe things... I would keep your old piece. I think the FAQ that the Captian wrote would back this up.

Not that I know much, still newb and all... but I read a lot.

Peace.

Aye, I know that King's defender isn't really up to it, even with spellpower enchant and wizard oil. It's just so nice running around with an epic sword :)

What is the first epic proper tankadin sword that we are likely to come across? Is there even one?!

Only epic spell damage sword I could find:

http://www.wowwiki.com/Fang_of_the_Leviathan

Looks pretty cool to.

Not that a paladin should have priority or anything, just saying it's the only epic spell damage sword I could find. XD

Yeah, the [wowitem=30095]Fang of the Leviathan[/wowitem] is what I see referrenced a lot as a good paladin tanking sword. Imo the best tanking weapons still are the arena reward maces, the latest one being the [wowitem=33687]Vengeful Gladiator's Gavel[/wowitem]. You get a ton of spell damage, a good amount of stamina, and at a nice 1.6 second swing timer. Spell hit and resilience isn't too bad either.

If you're really looking for a mitigation sword without spellpower, consider the Riftmaker. On bosses like Maulgar where there may not be a DPS Warrior handy to Thunderclap the mob the 10% reduction in attack speed is huge when it procs, and IIRC it procs quite a bit.
#13 Dec 12 2007 at 3:26 PM Rating: Good
Riftmaker is a dagger not a sword.

Hm. Well, that's upsetting.

The fang of the Fang of the Leviathan looks great, if I ever get that far :) But seriously can't Blizzard come up with a differnt white damage dps rating!! only for variety if nothing else!!!!

Edit: Actually, that still doesn't seem a true tankadin sword like the crystalforged... You will still be fighting for it with the casters rather than everyone just accepting it is tankadin property......

Edit: Not saying its not great, just that it doesn't cover all areas key to a tankadin...

Yeah... you can throw it at a rogue and make him do it though.

I dunno if there is one in ZM, but last time I checked there weren't any other swords that were as obviously meant for Paladin tanks as the Crystalforged Sword.
