#1 Dec 07 2007 at 7:22 PM Rating: Decent
ok so ive been playing rogue for the past... 32 levels, and i want a bit of change. Im thinking of going for the class that owns in magic, mage! i just made a mage on my server horde side, blood elf, its lvl 10. im pretty much liking it a lot, any advice anyone can give me on how to level up? is grinding the best way further up? should i be partying more often then soloing? Is intelligence the best attribute to excel in?

and keep in mind, i wanna be the biggest DD on my server =)

so any help would be great! thanks!

What a coincidence, I just made a mage. Level 12. Check her out here:

I've been focusing on whatever stats I can get so far. For instance, my cloak has +1 str which is totally useless to me, but it also has +2 stam which is better than a white cloak, if you ask me.

Everything I'm wearing is either a quest reward or made by me or a drop. For instance, my robe is from a rare mob I killed in that early Belf quest where you kill the mana serpents and arcane ghost looking dudes to the east of SMC. Mostly made by me, actually. Tailoring already at 110.

I'm not looking to be the #1 DD. I'm looking to destroy in PVP.

As for the best attribute to excel in, well I'm gonna gear sorta like I did with my priest (48 right now). Basically, lots of spell damage, int, and all that. For pvp, I'm gonna get lots of stam. So stam, spell damage, and int. From what I hear, spirit really isn't that useful to mage, so it's not my focus. Of course, spell hit and crit will come into play later but I'm not worried about that right now.

As for best way to level up, well that's easy enough to answer. Questing, my friend. Always questing. Quests from 20-60 give you more xp now, so a quest that previously gave 5,500 xp now gives me over 11,000. That's awesome. I gained a quarter of a level turning in 3 BRD quests I did last night on my 54 Druid.

Edit: a question to experienced mages: is frost or fire better for leveling or are both viable options? The reason I ask is my cousin laughed when I told him I was leveling as frost and said that fire was better. Then again, this is the same cousin that keeps trying to coerce my uncle to spec MM on his hunter as he swears up and down that MM is the best hunter spec for everything including leveling, and I know that is false.

Both are viable options. Pick the one you want, just make sure you spec it for leveling and not all over the place or in raid talents.

Well, I wanna both level and take breaks at each bracket for a lot of pvp, so I'm sure I'll end up with yet another toon I need to swap specs with, again and again. Oy vey.

Not entirely true. Many of the frost talents for leveling just happen to coincide with good PvP. Just think Burst, Control, Survive. Get the talents that help those the best and you'll be set.

Simple answer:

Fire is better at lower levels cause you do not have access to some of the later tier survivability stuff. You can do more damage with fire Early, so generally you see people spec'd fire for the first few levels. The exact level is arguable, but many people switch to frost in the late 30's or early 40's.

Get +Int and +Sta gear. There are a few good pieces of +Fire or +Frost gear in the teens. Tailoring is easy till you get to Silk, even then it's not too bad.

No matter what you read, you can not AOE grind until later levels. Everyone seems to want to come up with a "AOE Grind at lvl 3 guide", but effectively you need a good frost spec with +Bliz. Hearding up lvl 7 mobs when you are lvl 25 and spaming Arcane Explosion is not AOE farming/grinding. Killing 2 greens and using up all your mana is nto gringing either.
