Ok, so hopefully this topic hasn't been done to death. If so, I apologize... maybe I can approach it from a different angle...

My hunter is currently at lvl 67 (4/5 of the way to 68). When I rolled him a few months ago, I started with skinning / LW. At the time, I found LW to be a bit of a drag and wanted to get as much money as I could. Seeing as this was my first toon to get past lvl 50 (I have a 50 pally with mining/BS-Armor), I picked up mining so that I basically had a farming toon. I sold my leather and smelted bars and was able to pay for whatever I needed (lvl 40 mount, epic mount, nice gear) without any donations from my guild.

However, I'm at the point now where I'm getting a little frustrated with mining and thinking about picking up LW again. I'm not making so much money from mining any more, but then again, I don't go out of my way to farm ore too much either. It's just a little disappointing that I used to be able to sell Mithril for 15g a stack and Fel Iron is barely going over 12g a stack.

Whatever knothide I pick up I save, and I have a guildie convert scraps to leather for me, so I don't need to be a LW. I can even farm the mats for the higher end leg armor kits and have him make them for me to sell and make some nice money off of that (more than mining as far as I can tell). But the point is that I have to rely on someone else to do this for me.

I've even saved up 99% of the mats I'll need to take me to 325 LW, so that I don't have to spend money in the AH to level up.

Can LW be more profitable than mining at this point?

Would it make sense to drop mining just so that I don't have to depend on someone else making LW items for me to sell?

Am I missing something about mining that's preventing me from making money off of that?

I'm not looking for someone to tell me what to do, I'm just curious what experiences the rest of you have had with this...

Thank you!

**Sorry for the long-worded post, just something that I've been trying to decide on recently and wanted to give the entire thought progression.**

EDIT:
Eh, I just realized now that maybe I should have posted this in the profession forum. Sorry about that... but I don't think it'd be a bad idea to hear from hunters. TBH, I have looked there in the past and never found the posters to be as informative and those here. :)

LW isn't ever going to be profitable for you... unless you get some epic drops when you start raiding that you can sell for a bunch of money... but the odds aren't great.

Pretty much what you'll do with LW is level it up to 375 and then make yourself the Epic pattern of your choice to wear which will last you until it's replaced in Kara.. and MAYBE you'll get a good drop that will make you some money, but I wouldn't count on it.

Perhaps I should wait and see if and epic recipes drop for me (or maybe get very lucky in the AH)?

Assuming an epic pattern ever drops...

Would it be bad taste to inform my guildmates about my intention and to roll on these recipes even if I'm not LW at the time?

That's one of the toss-ups I'm having too. I'd be ok with not changing over to LW yet, but I don't know if it would be inappropriate to roll on these recipes only because I intend to be a LW.

Stop switching trade skills. You're just guaranteeing you'll be poor and won't have the rare recipes (excepting those you buy from factions). Pick one and stick to it. The only trade I recommend you not take as a hunter is tailor. All the rest can work with a hunter.

I'm still currently doing a bit of research, but once at 70 I plan to switch from my extra farming skill of mining to LW. Although, since I planned to make this switch a long time ago, I saved a bunch of lower level leathers so that skilling up us a bit less expensive. I haven't switched yet because I am still researching rep reward reciepes. Although, the reason I am doing this is soley because it looks unlikely that I'll be doing much raiding any time soon.

Enchanting has always been a great money maker for me, but not because I enchant stuff, but because I DE everything and then sell the mats. I only enchant enough to raise my skill high enough to move up to the next tier of DE skill. Here is the problem, I have to make concious efforst to go to some of the higher end Azeroth dungeons I can solo at 70 and run them, more than once or twice to get enough mats to be seriously profitable.

My point is this really, once you cap out any skill, and your lvl for tha matter, you're going to have to go out of your way to farm mats to sell or use to make stuff to sell. Pick what you like to do and stick with it, otherwise you're just wasting your time and money.
