Apparently everyone is hating on Blackout as a starting talent choice in the shadow spec. Personally I've had a lot of success and enjoyment with it. It feels like it procs more than 10% and it gives me three extra seconds where I can cast a heal on myself, let SW Pain proc once, and let my cool down to bubble again go down 3 seconds without worrying about getting hit.

I don't mean to say that its a good choice for later on but I definitely think its worth picking up when you start to level.

I love black out... that is sometimes. Other times i wish it would of proced 10 yards closer to me. my norm rotation is MB->SW:P-> Flay,Flay -> then either MB again or just wand if I decide to throw VE into the mix.

the times I hate Blackout is when it procs ont he first MB or the first tic of SW:P. cuase then the mobs are not close enough for a flay and everything else is on cooldown. so here I am sitting with my thumb up... the Mob is free and thats a wasted 3 seconds.

On the other hand it has saved me a few times esp when fighting 3 mobs. that 1 mob blacked out gives me enough time to still get beated on for either a flash heal, or a Gheal if its just 2 mobs.

Also I didnt go nor do I think Ill go 5/5 in it.

Oh and as a starting talent... NO! i waited a while ( almost my mid 30s b4 I picked it up) If you didnt choose spirit Tap, respec into it, or just put your next 5 levels into it.

It can proc off the original SW:P cast, but not any of the following ticks. So you're right.

I could have sworn I seen it kick in while Pain was ticking, not from the initial cast of other spells. Could be mistaken, or they might have changed this with one of the patches.

It doesn't proc off ticks, fortunately or unfortunately. I have a lower level priest that's fun, but man I know blackout is annoying on my rogue.

as u stated we are looking at this from the "just started leveling" point of view. in this regard spirit tap outweights it by a fair margin.

True story:
Me and my IRL friend start each his own priest. I went the leveling route: spirit tap, imp SW:P , shadow focus, mf etc... he went almost the same but got Blackout.
this lead to me having almots no downtime if i got the killing blow..and since he did not need that he left me to have it.. at 22 he respect out of blackout and into spirit tap.

my point is that i love BO.. my 61 priest has both ST and BO.. but as a starter talent Spirit tap is great ... if i ever rerrol another priest..(which i think i will) 5/5 spirit tap from the start... it pwns.

my S.Priest is currently only 32 but...

I went 5/5 ST as my first 5 talents, and for solo PVE it's definately the way to go.

I'm now doing a lot more PVP and group play, in which ST just isn't as useful, I'll be respeccing to Blackout at either 39, for the 39 cap, or 40 when i get shadowform

if u go with the 14/47 raid spec that every decent shadow preist uses every single one has black out including me if done right uwont oom anyways and u bring more to a party

I'm sorry, but saying Blackout is the only decent choice is wrong. Blackout only really pulls ahead of Spirit Tap at Kael and beyond in PvE progression, because at that point you're probably sitting in more mana than you can use. However, through all 10 bosses of T5 content, there is a grand total of ONE boss that you won't be able to get killing blows on to proc Spirit Tap for the extra mana - Reaver. Hydross has the elementals, Leo the demons, Tidewalker the murlocs... nabbing some extra mana is far more useful than a stun that will be worthless on almost all bosses (the exceptions being stalker kiting on Vashj and the Solarian priests).

My advice is Spirit Tap through until you start Kael, Blackout in T6 content or for PvP'ers, and possibly both while leveling with the intention of switching out at a later time for something more useful.
