So there it is, the inevitable noob gear check. I will be gearing up with PvE in mind, but I do enjoy BG's and plan on starting 2vs2 arena soon. My goal is to be ready to do Kara runs in a month or two, and I wanted to see how realistic that is.

A few disclaimers; This is my 1st MMORPG and 1st toon, my talents are still AoE spec so don't worry too much about them, although constructive criticism will be listened to. And lastly I have been 70 for a week so don't expect much.

So basically I am wondering what "level" of instances you experienced players would think I am ready for(gear wise), and what suggestions you have for gearing up. I have read alot on this topic but I would like to hear your opinions as well since I've been really impressed with some posters knowledge here.

Be gentle...

If you want to do karazhan, the start of karazhan, youre, well, try and do some 5-man instance, or do Heroic if you can, your gear looks okay for Heroics, but for karazhan, im not sure.. and try to get some hit rating, because seeing "Miss" sucks, and a "Miss" doesnt do dmg, if you know where im heading ^^

Cant tell you much more, my mage isnt 70 yet, but ive got a druid in karazhan, and I know a good deal about whats needed, heh, can see it on my guildies too ^^

As far as gear:
Work on getting some level 70 blues with spell hit. The rest will likely work itself out from there. This is an excellent website for looking at instance drops.

As far as everything else:
You need enchants. Badly. While waiting for instance groups, go do quests in Netherstorm. This will benefit you in three ways.

1)You will get gold from completing quests that you can use to buy enchants for most of your items.
2)You will likely get Scryer rep, which has a side benefit of giving Sha'tar rep up until a certain point(friendly or so, iirc).
3)You will get quests for the Tempest Keep instances. Which is good, because if you want to take yourself seriously as a mage, you will live in those until you are revered with the Sha'tar and can get the helm enchant.

Overall, your reputations are abnormally low. Did you grind to 70?

Wow, I'm no pro at Mage talent builds, but, uh, you might want to redo your talents to benefit you more in group situations. Seeing as you don't have Frostbite and do have Improved Blizzard, combined with your low reputation, I'm guessing you AOE grinded most of the way to level 70, correct?

I'd probably go with something like this for groups. Most notably I got you clearcasting which is going to save you some mana down the road.

You can do some of the Heroics with your gear but i wouldn't suggest doing shattered halls..ramparts..arca or any of the hard ones.
you can start making your gear with pvp items (bracers-neck-boots-belt)it will take some time to get all the honor ofc but after that it's easy to grind the mats for battlecast set or spellstrike set.
some more spell hit would be realy nice though.like scryers bloodgem or the cenarion ring(needs exalted though)
although you don't need to worry too much about your gear.just get some blues from instances and some spell hit..you will be geared in kara realy fast imo.
and if you have a guild which can at least clear kara you will be more than fine.
although if your guild doesn't clear kara yet and needs some more coordination or gear for it i suggest to respecc yourself to fire...and asap..

I would drop alch and pick up tailor. For mages getting the crafted sets is huge if you want to raid. You wont replace the 3 pieces for a while. Past Kara for sure.

ice mages and raiding are not exactly ideal early on. Fire mages rule the raid scene atm, If you want to join that crowd then you need to become a tailor and spec a version of 10/48/3. If you don't want to become a tailor then you multiply the workload x10 and be prepared to run tons of instances and hope to get some drops that are comparable to the tailored sets (goodluck).

... I do hope this won't deteriorate into a frost vs fire for raids discussion. Pre -kara and even through kara, you can raid as frost providing your gear is good enough.

QFT. In fact, you cannot get any gear comparable to the tailored set before T5 (SSC, TK).

Some goals to look toward are around 100 spell hit, 650 - 750 damage (unbuffed), and around 20% crit (buffed). Those will set you up nicely for Kara. Hit is probably the most important, because as stated miss = 0 dps. With the tailor set you will have a good start as it is a wicked set (fire or frost). Get your scryer rep up and grab a Scryer's Bloodgem. Its a very good trinket not to mention 32 hit rating.

Look into a 1 hand / off hand combo for your weapon, there are a few that drop in the different 70 5-mans.

p.s. Frost does absolutely fine in raids, and a 40/0/21 build is really mana efficient and does great damage

Thanks for all the replies. My armory profile didnt update to show the changes I made before my 1st post for some reason. I had the runesong dagger and the draenei crystal rod: of the invoker equiped but not showing.

As for spell hit I won't be fighting anything lvl 73 for a while so I planned on maxing spell damage until then. I'll keep an eye out for +hit though as I move toward heroics and kara (still a long way off) but now I have a good idea about what stats to aim for.

I do realise I need enchants badly but I'm saving up for my epic flyer now and have precious little cash to spare (zip zero nadda actually). Once I get it I will start to get my enchants, spellthread etc. I was thinking of waiting till I had gear I would keep for a little while before enchanting though, as I'll be upgrading almost everything but the gloves in the next 2-3 weeks anyways.

As for talents I had I'm planning on waiting till 2.3.2 comes out before I do any respecing since I want to see what icy veins changes 1st. I have no problem with speccing fire or whatever my guild currently needs, but at the moment frost is fine. I'll be picking up tailoring too thanks to your advice.
And yes, I did ALOT of AoEing but I also followed Jame's Alliance leveling guide till 57, then went to outlands and did a mix of quest grinding and AoEing.
I hit 70 with 18 days played so I missed alot of content and rep and I'm working to fix that now.

It should cost you no more than about 20g or so to get basic, useful enchants on your bracers, chest, and gloves.

You don't have to have the best of the best enchants, but having anything helps. Granted I say this and keep forgetting to bug a guildie to enchant my Paladin's new shield. Smiley: laugh
