All right, so I've fallen in love with my Druid again - which is kinda scary since he's a he, a dude. Anyways, I'm kinda burned out on battlegrounds and stuff after about 17000 honor and no wins.

So, heroics. Never really tried any heroic instances yet. Hell, I still need to do some of the regular instances. I figured Hellfire Citadel is a nice little heroic to start with. To learn the pace of the game, etc.

Druid stats in tanking gear (yes, I need more defense), self-buffed:

Health: 12,074
Armor: 13,356
Defense: 396 skill
Dodge: 26.12%
Hit: 52 rating

Not sure if hit rating is important, but now it's there. I plan on getting Earthwarden within the near future which will increase my defense and armor by a bit. A cloak with more defense and armor is also on the to-get list.

Anything else I'd absolutely need before venturing into my first heroic? And what heroic should I start out with?

I'm right there with ya, haven't tried any heroics and haven't even done all the REGULAR instances. So I probably shouldn't bother responding but I can't help myself...I'm as addicted to this forum as I am to the damn game. : )

That said, I'm pretty sure consensus will be that you need to seriously armor up.

My favoritest and most frequently-recommended-est post ever is Anathor's shopping list for building a tanking set: http://wow.allakhazam.com/db/class.html?wclass=6;mid=1184859383323516343;page=1;howmany=50#m118486006860405180

Just getting the best-bang-for-your-buck items in that list, which are underlined for your convenience, should put you up around 20k armor. Combining that list with a quick trip to Thotbott can give you a nice little shopping list that consists of a trip to the AH and some quest chains to focus on, mostly in Shadowmoon Valley.

The typical numbers that you see for a druid tank are: 12000 health, 20,000 armor, 415 defense, and 25% dodge. However, your numbers will largely depend on the healer you are grouping with and what amount of damage they feel comfotable healing. A safer bet would be to bring armor to about 22,000 and dodge to about 27%. This should allow you run with most healers.

Keep in mind that heroics are a completely different world. You can no longer expect a hunter to hold a mob off while you try to regain agrro. Most clothies and leather-wearers will be one shotted, and mail wearers may hold up to three...maybe. CC is crucial and any loose mobs must be tanked by you or a wipe is immenent.(Sorry if this is a rather gloomy outlook on heroics but its the reality of them) Once you get used to the new difficulty level heroics become much simpiler and ultimitely enjoyable.

As for a first run, I don't really have any recomendations. Most heroics are of comparable difficulty, while boss encounters are generally difficult in different ways. That being said my fist heroic was heroic ramparts. The last boss in particular is a great test of your gear and tanking skill.

I'm working on that list already, JeeBar. It's a great list, but unfortunately some of the items require a group to get and my server apparently ran out of good PuGs.

Anyways, I know my armor is waaaay too low. Once I get Earthwarden and the cloak it'll help. I'll soon have enough honor to buy the Gladiator's Maul and then I'll work my way through the list of green sucky items that I'm wearing.

Tanking suddenly became a lot less interesting. Perhaps I should team up with some of my guildies and go as DPS instead. Would allow me to focus on getting the Gladiator set as well.

don't get me wrong, I love to dps in 5-mans and kara, but to be honest it
doesnt happen too often...

Tank and healer is in my experience the most sought after classes,
I see constant spamming LFM tank and healer, and when the capable classes
refuse, it gets even worse, i.e warriors expecting to get a DPS spot an so on...

In a perfect world there would be room for any spec and any class, but
everyone can't be dps, and there certainly are enough rogues/hunters/mages/warlocks that line up for that.

If you got friends and a fixed spot, it's all good and well, but if you rely
mostly on pugs to get things done (I do, and I don't find it too horrible :),
then it would be a good idea to bring tank gear.
Especially for heroics, as druids have very limited cc capabilities.

Also, don't forget that PvP items are actually quite good for tanking, as they
focus on relevant stats such as stamina, armor, resilience and agility.
With only 2 arena set pieces you can reach in excess of 70 resilience,
which brings you quite far on the road to becoming uncrittable (you need 104 if
you have 0 defense).

as a feral druid i'd expect to tank most 5 mans i'm in unless its a guild run and i can get a dps slot. i doubt a feral could heal a heroic, but my experience of healing with druids is pitiful at best (thats why i have a priest ^^)

the only time i dps these days is as the OT/dps slot in raids. I've tanked every 5 man heroic and regular that i've been in for ages.

i think the most important 2 stats you need to raise are going to be the armour and defence. if you're close to your EW then hopefully that and a few gems should sort out the def.

its been said before, but i'll say it again, if you're not already in it get the Heavy Clefthoof set for tanking. its a great started set and really boosts your armour/sta/def

Thanks for the info on Bear stats for heroics.

One question I have is; How important is strength / AP in order to hold aggro?

What's a good number for Bear Str / AP be so I can keep aggro well enough for DpS to do their job too (without sacrificing too much bonus dodge from Agi) in a Heroic instance?

Current stats:
Str: 137
Agi: 226
Stam: 869

AP: 1055
Armor: 22k
Hp: 12k
Dodge: 21%
Def: 399

EditNotes: Adjusted some gear so I hit crit proof (410 def a little over the top) and a bit more dodge (up to 23% now), had zero problems holding aggro with 1500 attack power and about 140 Str, healer was fine with 1400 + healing. Now my only issue is to convince delusional DpS that 700 DpS ain't going to make the cut. Smiley: oyvey
