Best defence in FireFollow

#1 Dec 05 2007 at 4:04 AM Rating: Decent
I am a fairly new mage building a fire spec. Frost has good defence with Frost Armor and Frost Nova but is there a good defence strategy in the fire spec that does not rely on frost?

I am currently lvl 25 and putting all my points into fire talents.

Some help from any experienced mage would be welcome.

Until you get mage armor, you'll always want to use Frost Armor/Ice Armor. Then it's up to you.

And you'll always want to use frost nova.

ALWAYS. Smiley: nod

But you don't need points in either to use them.

From a PVE perspective you should be killing things fast enough that they do not get a chance to hit you. My PVE pulls at lvl 32 (close to you):

PyroBlast
Fireball

Get hit 1 - 2 times

Fireblast (Do this before Frost Nova, cause damage can break the Nova)

Frost Nova

Jump Back 2 times

Use wand if it's nearly dead to save mana
Use Fireball or scorch if there's more health left...

Blazing Speed is a nice defensive ability. It has a 10% chance to activate when being attacked by melee or ranged damage, if you get both talent points down in the fire tree.

It's 'defensive' as in, it's a speed boost that will get you away from being so close to your enemy so you can cast at them from farther, as a mage's greatest safety is his distance from his enemy.

Yup, as a fire mage, I found that the greatest way of being defensive (keeping the mob away from you), is all out offense .. kill him before he gets to you. For that reason, I've stacked +fire and spell damage where I can (sitting at 205 fire damage now at level 46)

Important abilities include Flame throwing (those extra 6 yards can make all the diffs), impact (hell, the mob just stands there waiting to be hit again), Blast wave (Stuns all mobs in range). Further up the tree is DragonsBreath which also does a stun type effect. All of these things give you the little extra time you need to nuke away.

ofc, never forget sheep, blink and most important of all (even for a fire mage), Frost Nova. Ice armor can also be your friend if they DO get to use, as it slows them down as well. Although once you learn to use your abilities effectively to make sure you don't get hit, you might switch to Mage Armour to keep mana coming more steadily.

Clever use of sheep, frost nova and all out nuking can allow you to take down 3 mobs at a time (sometimes 4). Not quite as impessive as frost (where you can take 8-10 down at will), but the absolute satisfaction of practically one shotting a mob of your own level if your pyro crits big enough (taking into consideration the pyro DoT and ignite DoT), is unparalled ;-)

Blast wave has a daze effect (reduced movement speed), not a stun effect unless impact procs.
