heroic gear questionFollow

Since I hate being a brainless healbot, I decided to respec back to protection for running most of shadowmoon valley, netherstorm, and blades edge but thankfully my guild is starting to gear for heroic runs. I've worked out a gear list that I think will work for at least getting me started in some of the lower heroic instances as well as in the normal lvl 70 instances.

http://www.wowhead.com/?item=28203 (breastplate of the righteous)
http://www.wowhead.com/?item=28285 (helm of the righteous) or http://www.wowhead.com/?item=28285 (greathelm of the unbreakable) I already have this from shattered halls, but I am more drawn toward the helm of righteousness simply for the ability to jewel it
http://www.wowhead.com/?item=27813 (boots of the colossus)
http://www.wowhead.com/?item=27535 (Gauntlets of the righteous) or http://www.wowhead.com/?item=23517#created-by (felsteel glove)
http://www.wowhead.com/?item=29783 (legguards of the resolute) or http://www.wowhead.com/?item=27839 (legplates of the righteous)
http://www.wowhead.com/?item=27847 (fanblade pauldrons) I decided to go with this one, simply due to it looks cool, but yes I realize it only drops in heroics so I'd probably start with http://www.wowhead.com/?item=30381 (Kaylaan's spaulders) for the increase to spells
http://www.wowhead.com/?item=27672 (girle of the immovable) or http://www.wowhead.com/?item=31460 (sha'tari vindicator's waistguard) even though I'm not quite sure how to pick up this quest.
http://www.wowhead.com/?item=24253 (cloak of eternity) simply because I've got a tailor that can easily make this
http://www.wowhead.com/?item=27822 (crystal band of valor)
http://www.wowhead.com/?item=27436 (iron band of the unbreakable)
http://www.wowhead.com/?item=29173 (strength of the untamed)
http://www.wowhead.com/?item=27529 (figurine of the colossus)

For sword I've already got the crystalforge sword that everyone loves, though not sure what enchant to have put on it. I know I didn't link a shield because I'm not sure which one I want. I've got one, course I can't remember the name that I think might do for like heroic ramps and then I'll just upgrade from there.

Well sorry for the extremely long post, and thanks as always for any and all suggestions.

The Righteous set is a good place to start, though it won't be good enough for raids and possibly not even heroics (the full set that is, 1 or 2 pieces would be ok). I still keep it around for "downgrading" when I run normal dungeons. I would recommend getting the full Felsteel set though until you are revered with the Keepers of Time and can get Timewarden's Leggings (if you're already there, I apologise). Felsteel Helm > Greathelm of the Unbreakable as well regardless of whether you haveathe full set on.

To get you to the Fanblade Pauldrons get teh Righteous Spaulders. Those are the ones I used up until getting my Tier 4 from Maulgar. Still have the increase in spells you mentioned which is always nice, but are far superior in the other areas a Tankadin needs as well. General rule: NO greens in a Heroic if possible :)

For shield I'd go get the Crest of the Sha'tar as soon as you have revered with the Sha'tar faction, but to tide you over might want to look into the shields that drop in Botanica (Aegis of the Sunbird) and Shadow Labyrinth (Platinum Shield of the Valorous).

Those few pointers should get you ready. Also Thel's sticky at the top of the page would give you a more indepth gear list to shoot for.

And as for the sword enchant: +40 spell damage should be your enchant of choice for weapons when tankign, period :)

EDIT: took out the quote I had of the OP, wasn't needed.

Yea I agree on the righteous set, figured it might be just good enough to get me into heroic ramps/furnace during guild runs. But as far as raids are concerned yea I don't plan on using anything that I've gotten for the start of heroic runs, I'll wait a while and do plenty of heroic runs till I'm confident in my gear, plus I know that there's a sticky about stat minimum requirements for doing kara. Thx tho for the info.

Is that the gear list you already have or what you're working towards? I"m going to guess the latter as you've listed some gear from heroics (Girdle of the immovable and boots of the collosus).

I agree on the righteous set, there are plenty of things (listed in Thels sticky) that drop off the regular bosses/are quest rewards that are actually better for paladin tanking.

One thing to remember as you run things and peruse the auction house - if you plan on running heroic Mana Tombs, roll Need and/or start buying the shadow prot gear you can find. Heroic Pandemonius pretty much requires it (upside is that there's little to now physical damage during the fight so if it's leather/mail/cloth it's still bettter than your plate non-shadow resist gear.)

Good thing to point out about MT. I did it the first time in there with no Shadow Resist except my Aura, and I sure wish I had some actual gear to go with it. It helped that the first time I was in there was very recently so I already had all this epic gear I'm donning now, but without it, don't think I would have made it through that fight in no Shadow Resist gear.

Also wanted to say that the lower level dungeons aren't "necessarily" easier when put on Heroic mode than the higher level ones. I say that simply cause you pointed out running Ramps/BF first. I consider both to be of a higher difficulty than say Slave Pens and Mechanar. No problem with running Ramps/BF first, as all Heroics are much more difficult than their normal mode counterparts, but something to think about when you start.

good to know about the shadow gear. Yes the list is a "wish list" that I got from the wow-loot site since I was a little overwhelmed with thel's sticky on gear, but the more I look at it, I might update it a little to include a few items that are a little easier to acquire since most of my list now is in the 5-10% drop range for most items and don't think any are items that I could find on AH.

So since a lot of people have commented about the righteous set, what's the point of it then? Is it more of a healer/ret set than tanking set? I've also heard about I think it's called the doomguard set? Any thoughts on that one?

I dont think the righteous set is good for any one specc. It seems to be a good start if you want to respec but saying that there are better tank drops in those dungeons anyway like the warrior D3 gear (especially shoulders and gauntlets).

Felsteel set is good if you have the gold to buy it off a BS. Timewardens Leggings if you have rep with CoT, which you will be able to get eventually if your planning on getting keyed for kara.

If you haven't yet completed the quest in the Black Morass, there is a nice quest tanking ring there. (Bonus of completing this quest is it gives you enough rep for Timewarden's Leggings and the tanking head glyph)

Also try getting:
-Jade skull breastplate from Mechanar
-Shield from first boss in Shadow Labs

These are all in Thels guide though so check which one's are best for you and go for your life.

The Righteous set is great for normal 5-mans and filling in spots where you don't have better gear since it has Defense rating on it as well as spell damage/intellect. Not to mention it's set bonuses are meant for tanks.

The Doomplate is what you are referring to, and it is DPS gear. I would not advise using any of it while tanking unless it were all you had for a particular slot.

The Bold armor is the Warrior D3 tank set as stated, and while good, it is obviously tailored for a Warrior (check the set bonuses). If you manage to get some Bold to drop and it is an upgrade, go ahead and use it, but I wouldn't necessarily seek the Bold set out as it is as easily replaceable as the Righteous set is with other dungeon blues.

I'm not trying to come off condescending, but read the sticky a little deeper. It took me a few reads (when I was pissed about being a good healer and groups still bringing me down) but eventually some things stuck out for me.

The percentages in each of the pre-kara/heroics section. The wonderful post breaks them down accordingly and gives percentages that benefit A)avoiding critical strikes and B) ESPECIALLY for us, avoiding crushing blows. That's what the "paladin cb" stands for.

Since we cannot avoid crushing blows with a 490 in defense and marginal avoidance, we need to have 490 defense and 168 block rating to avoid critical strikes and crushing blows while holy shield is active. You can use other avoidance stats, but I gave up math in college. On top of that you need to stack up as much armor and stamina as you can, so newb healers can keep you up.

What I did was go down the list in the pre-kara sections, and compared the list to what I have looted from normal instances and heroics I've done healing. Surprisingly, all I need is 2 pieces of gear, all enchants, and a respec, and I can probably tank better than the dolts I've been healing in all normal instances, and quite a few Heroic flops I have participated in.

Get the statistics down, keep holy shield active, consecrate, and watch people love you because you solved the "aggro" problem that most newb tanks can't control.

(Side note: I wish they didn't lower the rep standards for heroics.)

"Trying" to not be condescending is just a fear of giving advice. All in all, if the advice is true and helpful (which yours is) no one will think you are being condescending.

If you're being a jerk, insulting their intelligence, and pretty much trying to be condescending, people will notice and will get mad or scared or get depressed and try to drink their problems away.
