Ok,

I’m sure that most of this is due to the fact that I am new. I’m getting slaughtered in PVP. I don’t mind losing to a high level - There's nothing I can do and it's a PVP server (that's life), but twice last night I saw a guy within 2 levels of me and they both wrecked me.

The first was a Lock at my level (32). I destroyed his pet, then he feared me 2x and he killed me easily. The next was a Paly – I got his health down, he healed, clubbed me to death.

Do I need +STA gear to survive any encounter? I have pretty good +INT gear – at lvl 32 I’m in the 170s. I also do not have the ability to twink this mage – it’s my main. I’m not looking to win or dominate in PVP – I just want to run away most of the time, but it seems like my nova and CoC are resisted most of the time, and I have to stand there getting clubbed to fire off a bolt. Also – Blink still keeps me in range for any of their attacks or slows or CC (aka like the fear I just got killed on)…

Can anyone offer some PVP strategy. 1. For if I'm ambushed or 2. If I'm the ambusher?

Any advice?

As for lower level PvP gear, the GENERAL rule is you want gear with stats in this priority:

1) +stam
2) +spell damage
3) +int

You want lots of health so you can survive longer, and you want more damage on each spell plus more mana to cast more spells. Pretty obvious.

Given straight up 1 v 1 situation with NO help:

Warlock: Given equal armor/level/skill .. a Warlock will beat a Mage 95% of the time. They are the Anti-Mage.

So knowing this, only fight a Warlock if you know you have them beat in 2/3 of those categories (pref all 3!).

Paladin: Ok so this one is easier assuming you succeed at one thing: Counter-spelling the paladin heal! It's not TOTALLY necc you do this, but if you do you will EASILY kill them.

A dumb paladin will wait until they are at 30% or so to heal. You then CS them and then pump out CoC/Fireblast/Arcane Explosion till they die.

A smart paladin will heal earlier on so that if you DO use the CS on them, they will not die before they can use it again, and then proceed to heal themselves when the CS wears off. This isn't a game breaker either. While healing.. you can get distance from them and blast frost bolt and then kite them.

Use blink to get out of stuns (and trinket when you get it). Try to blink behind them somewhere weird so its hard for them to find where you went.

So fighting a paladin 1v1 might go something like:
Paladin attempts to engage you. Scorch/frost bolt depending on distance while they are still far away. When they get close, Frost Nova them, run back and fireball/frost bolt/scorch until FN wears off and they try to get close again. Once close fire off instants fireblast CoC... By now they should be close to death and want to heal. CounterSpell! and watch them freak out as their heal doesn't work. Mean while you've been strafing back and already started to have a fireball cast or what not. Then instant them fast with fireblast CoC arcane explosion.

Paladins were always easy for me at these lower levels.

Now I will leave you with one thing:
In battlegrounds you are a TEAM, so try to keep it that way! What I discussed above was 1 v 1 situations with no help.

Stay with a teammate/group ... use the terrain as your friend (like in WSG hide in bushes or get on the roof and rain down).

You will succeed WAY more fighting in a group then any other class. Mages are targeted first for a reason. You leave a mage alone in a group and it will rip your face off with all the damage it is doing. On top of that you are crowd controlling the other guys using sheep/frost nova making it REALLY easy for your teammates to kill them.

So be that annoying guy the enemy hates. They see you casting spells on them from far away doing big damage, and they are like oh i got to squash that little glass cannon. So they run you down first, but you just FN and blink away from them while your teammates rip them apart.

I LOVE the fact I'm targeted first in most bg's b/c it I can blink FN trinket ice block / ice barrier etc to stay alive while my teammates kill them. Then they moment they realize going for you was a mistake and target that warrior mounchin their face, you then resume casting spells on them! Fun!

I love fighting warlocks! I have a 29 BGs mage and I wreck most warlocks that I come across. Of course at level 30 they get the felhunter, so I couldn't tell you how to deal with that, but if they don't, I've found them to be easy to handle (read: ignore or sheep the pet). Try this:

Cast fire ward and dampen magic on yourself (dampen should be already on unless you have a healer handy). Then use instants or scorch (short 1.5s cast) to hammer away at the warlock. Be looking for fear and counterspell it. You'll have 8 seconds where they can't recast fear on you (they'll be locked out of the shadow tree, leaving just fire, and you have fire ward up, right?). That should be ample time to destroy the lock. Arcane missiles can actually be handy against another caster because it will repeatedly interrupt their cast time. Watch out for curse of tongues and be sure to remove it (with remove lesser curse).

That's about it. Unless they are a very PVP savvy, you'll do fine against them. Of course, if they have 4x as much health you're pretty much toast. Stamina gear is very important.

Oh, and maybe replace your counterspell on your toolbar with this macro

#show Counterspell
/stopcasting
/cast Counterspell

This will cause you to stop casting another spell and immediately cast counterspell (if you're casting frostbolt for example). It will cancel the frostbolt and go straight into the counterspell. Very handy. I used to hit the space bar and jump to cancel spells so I could counter, and I was never able to counter fear. I added this macro and now I don't miss.

Hello!

I'm new to posting on the forum but have been reading the mage postings for months. I have been playing in AB (Arathi Basin) quite a while now and learning a lot about PvP, so I'll take a shot at answering your question.

Tactics, for the most part, will depend upon your spec. I am pure fire at the moment (lvl 47) and what I do will be vastly different from frost. So, here is what I have been doing in the BG's from my "Watch em burn" point of view.

Ambusher: I love nothing more than to see some Ally hero charging up the ramp to the lumber mill in AB while I am hidden behind a hill. If they are by themselves (for your question I am assuming 1 vs 1) and I have the jump, I target before he is in range and sheep once in range. Then, while the ally is grazing tasty grass at the gates to the underworld, I light up Pyro, chase into Fire blast range, FB, then blink TOWARD him and Blast wave. These three spells should have cooked him immediately, espcially if Ignite procs. However, If still alive, then I nova, back out of melee range and scorch until dead. If NOT dead, then my Fire Blast has recharged and he is dead then. IF the sheep breaks before my pyro goes off, (or nova) then its a new dance with new moves. Ultimately, my goal is to roast him as hard and fast as possible.

Ambushed: This all depends on what class is doing the ambushing. Last night, a rogue ambushed me in AB and I used the basic same trick to BBQ him. Once the stun was broken, I nova'd, sheeped then ran the same basic dance steps listed above. It was GG pretty quick. Until his Ally army arrived that is! LOL

Now, my play style is different. I like to mix it up and never really enjoyed flying kites. I guess thats why I chose fire. The Spirit Healer and I are good buds, too! However, if there is a large group of Ally and they are engaged with horde troops, I get in the rear and scorch/FB. That way, I get to enjoy watching enemy health fall like an avalanche and imagine the mindset of the enemy, saying to himself, "what tha...?!!!" and never knowing what or who is really pounding them.

These are BASIC BASIC BASIC. The key is be in or take control and in Douglas Adams immortal words, "Don't Panic". If you are dealing with a caster you will need counterspells, shields, etc. Be willing to use everything in your ******* to stay alive. Make sure you have your keyboard properly set up for what works best for YOU, etc etc etc.

There is so much more tactically involved than I listed and that is what, IMO, makes the mage the greatest and hardest class to play. You truly have to be the smartest player on the field, always aware of what is going on around you and ready to change tactics in a heartbeat.

I hope this helps!

Pretty noob in mage pvp here and only 38 but I find with hunters and locks, best to ignore the pet (sheep it if possible to take it out of action) and kill the toon. Once they die the pet goes away.

Thread hijack of sorts -- on pallies, i have quite a time kiting them since they have that blessing -- think it's freedom -- that lets them avoid snares. Am I doing something wrong? I can sheep em and pyro but then usually its only a matter of time until they get into melee. I try to blink out of their stun but if they have enough hp they can sometimes chase me down again before I can instant them to death. (I find that everyone but my toon has speed enchants.) And god help my squishy mage if they get the drop on me in melee range.

Pallies have been one of the toughest, by far, for me as well. I Guess it all depends on the quality of the opponent, but I have had a time with them in the 40's. I have been suprisingly successful against the locks lately for some reason.

Pallies? I enjoyed an epic battle against one the other night in AB and 1 vs 1 at that. I had the drop, sheeped and then started to pyro. He broke it, I FB'd him then we ran at each other... In the end, with all the heals he threw down, the potions/gems/spells I used for health/mana we both fell down dead at the same time. It literally came down to the last spell: I AE'd as I ran around him and he hacked me with his blade.

I don't know how this helps anyone against Pallies, but it was one of those fights where I would have saluted him had I won and thought I had to mention it. LOL

I guess what I am trying to say is against pallies, be prepared to go the distance and have a LARGE mana pool to hang in there during a 1 vs 1 fight.

For the Horde!!!
